By the time I walk back to the kitchen, where Boris is wiping the tears from his face and getting up from the floor, I've already developed a rudimentary goal. We need to gather all our possible weapons and supplies together, along with anyone we're gonna take along. Then, we book it for the hills and try to camp out in the nearby forests until the blockade is lifted.
I take a moment from my cyclic pacing to go check up on Boris, "Эй, камрад, с тобой все будет в порядке?"
He sniffs and takes a minute to blink his eyes ringed with red, "Да, я в порядке."
I pause as the answer seems to tip me off about something not being right, "Но ты собираешься быть?"
He takes a sharp inhale, "Я, черт возьми, не знаю! Я понятия не имею, как нам выжить в этом дерьме! Не сейчас, когда эти ублюдки убивают всех нас."
I notice his eyes dart once, twice, towards the knife block. Immediately I move to his side in between him and the knife block and put my arms tightly around him. I subtly move my hand to his neck to lightly feel for a pulse as I always do as a habit around him.
His face lightens and he chuckles, "Я жив Avery."
I blush and bury my face into his shoulder so he doesn't see before drawing my hand away from his neck, "Я знаю, мне просто нравится быть уверенным."
I instead place it firmly on his shoulder, regaining our soldierly composure and look him deep into his eyes, "Обещай мне. Обещай мне, Boris. Пообещай мне, что ты выйдешь отсюда живым, держа свою руку в моей."
He looks down remorsefully for a long time, as if pondering why one could care so much about someone who has done such awful things, "Хорожо. Я обещаю тебе, Avery, что я доживу до конца этой битвы, взяв твою руку в свою."
I quietly sigh of relief and return back to being at his side, it felt awkward and imposing to be in front of him. I lean and rest my head on his shoulder to close my eyes as I listen to the faint gunfire and screaming below move further down the street.
