Someone is talking to me. I can't make out the words but the voice sounds familiar and sweet, with a strong flavor of gravel and heavy with maturity.
I open my blurry eyes to find Boris standing over me, looking off to the side, at Grigori's body.
"Я собираюсь уложить его в постель, чтобы он отдохнул. Мне нужна ваша помощь."
Instantly, panic starts rising in me again. I try to wipe the frozen tears off of my face in vain.
We can't stay here any longer. We've already taken more than all the time we should've and made a whole bunch of noise. We're not the careful and efficient team that we used to be. All we are now is just two people crossing a freezing river in a raft of fire.
Any longer in one spot and the militia might find us. We can't outrun them in such a tight urban area where they could already be surrounding us. We need to leave.
I shake my head firmly, "Boris, нам пора идти."
His hand plants sternly on my shoulder and he glares almost as if looking through my eyes, searching for whatever risk-taking, dignity-gifting, charitable person he thought would be there, "Он мой друг! Я не оставлю его тело здесь, в таком унизительном месте! Его тело не будет образом жестокой и унизительной смерти!"
I look at his eyes in return, confused, almost dumbfounded at how one could have so much compassion and care for someone who is already dead. For someone who won't live to appreciate or benefit in the slightest from the risks taken. A man who has already lived his life and found his resting place, his home turned into the nightmare from the past.
While I look on, confused and stunned, Boris infuriatingly shoves me to the ground with a shout and storms off to the body, "Помоги мне, если ты человек! Мне все равно."
We don't have the time to be dealing with this. Every second that we spend separated from the group, separated from our only lifeline, is another second that we can get caught off guard and killed in mere moments.
He's not going to leave the body. Nothing I do or say will change his steel-hardened resolve. It's one of the things that I've always loved, and hated, about him. When he sets himself on something for the sake of those he holds dear and close to his heart, he'll readily put life and limb on the line for them.
Fuck this bullshit. He's my battle buddy and I need to stick by his side at all times, no matter what dumb shit he's doing. And besides, I love him.
