"This is Berk. It's twelve days north of hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the Meridian of Misery. My village.
In a word, sturdy. And it's been here for seven generations, but every single building is new. It snows nine months a year and hails the other three.

My name is Astrid Sigurdsson, and I'm a viking girl...

... well, I'm trying to be one.

My mom died when I was still a baby, and my dad didn't allow me to fight. If mom still would be here, she would allow me to fight for our village. How do I know that? Well, the chief, Hiccup Haddock, always told me stories about her. He knew her because she looked after him before I was even born.
I don't know if this is even allowed, but I fell for Hiccup five years ago. When I was ten and he fifteen. But there's one thing:
Hiccup always says I'm like a sister to him.
Every time my dad yelled at me or hit me, I went to Hiccup. He protected me. He made me laugh when I was sad. He teased and tickled me much. We had our own kind of fun. And somehow, because of his lovely and caring kind, I fell in love with him. But I doubt that he fell for me, too. I mean, it's impossible, right?

Anyways, back to my mom. Her name was Emily Hofferson. Before you ask how it could be, I'll just tell you.
I'm a devil's act. Well, some people called me like that. That means that my parents weren't married when I was born. So my mom stayed a Hofferson, and I got the name Sigurdsson.
A dragon killed my mom fifteen years ago. I think it was a deadly nadder. Her dead body was never found, but my dad didn't even think about searching for her. Hiccup missed her as badly as I did. My mom loved Hiccup like her own son. Like I said, she looked often after him because his dad, chief Stoick the Vast, was too busy for his son, and Hiccup's mom died a few days after his birth."

"Guess who it is!" A blonde haired girl put her both hands on his eyes. Hiccup lightly jumped up.
"Hm, I don't know. Maybe -Astrid!-" He pulled her on her arms to the free seat next to him. They were in the Great Hall, having dinner. Hiccup's friends Fishlegs, Heather, Tuffnut, Ruffnut and Snotloud were sitting at the big table, too. They all liked Astrid very much. Snotloud even tried to flirt with her. Yeah, tried.
"I have something for you." Astrid said and handed Hiccup a notebook over.
"You told me about it two weeks ago, remember? Dad wanted to burn mom's stuff yesterday, and this was the only thing I could save." Hiccup was the only one who knew what she was talking about. He hugged her.
"Thank you, Ast. I'll read it later when I find time." Astrid smiled at him and nodded.
"Yeah, sure. Can we read it together because of you-know-what?" She whispered the last sentence. Hiccup chuckled and nodded in understanding. He was the only person who knew that Astrid had dyslexia. Not even her dad knew about it. Emily also had dyslexia and no one knew. Well, except for Hiccup. She told him once. And he knew what happened with people who had dyslexia. They got killed.
He loved Emily, and he loved Astrid, so he wouldn't even risk someone finding it out.
Hiccup just loved Astrid too much for that.
