━━━━ the term point of view, shortened to pov, refers to who is telling a story, or who is narrating it. the narration of a story can no told three ways: first, second or third person.

within the warriors community, and wattpad as a whole, third and first tend to be the views that are commonly used in both writing and roleplaying. i see a lot of books written in both, and the majority of roleplay's lean towards third.

━ first person point of view is generally revealed by the use of "i" in a sentence: "i walked the dog". readers assume that this character is closely related to the story's action — either as a main character, or one who is close to the protagonist.

first person can provide a more intimate and deeper look into a characters mind, but it also limits the perceptive abilities of said character, as they are confined to report on what they would know about the story, and by their own perspective.

━ second person is structured around the pronoun "you", and less common in novel work. it can allow you to draw in a reader into the action as the narrator is speaking directly to them. writing in this view is considered a challenge.

━ third person narration refers to characters with third person pronouns. this is then subdivided into 'omniscient' and 'limited'.

the omniscient narrator knows everything about the story and its characters. they can enter anyone's mind, move freely through time, and give the reader their own opinions and observations as well as those of the characters. this narrator also knows more than the characters — like having a god's—eye—view of the characters.

the third person limited point of view is when an author sticks closely to one character but remains in third person. this style gives the ability to be inside a character's thoughts, feelings, and sensations, which gives readers a deeper experience of characters and scenes.

ways to use point of view:

━━ create suspense ,
━━ create an unreliable narrator ,
━━ create comedic irony ,
━━ create tragic irony ,

try putting your knowledge into writing. think of an event that involves two or more characters, then write out said event from the points of views of the characters, challenging yourself with third and first person point of view. ( or second if you're up for it )

after the scene is finished, read over it and ask yourself, or a friend:

━━ how did the point of view change the story?
━━ which view felt more compelling?
━━ which view felt more natural?

or, if you are working on a book already, switch it up. keep your progress but write out a chapter in a view that's different to the one you've written in. if your chapter is originally third, switch it to first. once you are done, ask yourself:

━━ what differences happened in how the character recounted the events?
━━ did the view change help you understand things better?
━━ did you enjoy writing in another view?

━━━━ what's the right point of view? there isn't one.

it can be difficult to figure out which point of view works best for you, and the best way around this is to test the waters.

do words sound better in first point of view? perhaps it sounds better in third? is third—person going to do justice for the ideas and plots you have in mind? do you want a more intimate narration through a first person point of view?

so what can you do?

━━ try different points of views ,
━━ once picked, establish it correctly ,
━━ be aware of your limitations ,
━━ change it if you're unsure ,
