...

Thomas sighed, flopping down on his bed and burying his head in his pillow.

His day had been trash. School seemed to drag on forever, and he had been exhausted all day, barely being able to pay attention to anything.

The only thing that kept him going that day was the thought of his boyfriend, Newt. They hadn't spoken in a while, as Newt had recently moved a town over, and because their parents didn't know about their relationship neither of them could come up with a good excuse to see each other.

But Thomas had finally worked up the courage to sneak out on Saturday and meet up with him. He had planned everything and now just needed to ask Newt if he would like to.

Thomas smiled, his chest filling with butterflies at the thought of seeing his gorgeous boyfriend again, finally face-to-face after several months of long distance.

He reached for his school bag and grabbed his phone, sitting up and turning it on, hastily.

He frowned when he saw that he already had a notification from Newt, something he hadn't seen in a few days. What also caught his attention was that it was sent earlier that morning, he didn't understand how he didn't notice it before but just brushed it off.

He unlocked his phone and went straight to his texts, his heart fluttering in excitement.

He looked at the text, reading through it, not really comprehending what it said the first time. He read it again, it was obviously hastily typed and most likely rushed.

Newt <3
Hey so i know it's like 4 in the morning and ill probably forget about this later but its over sooo yeah since we technically have the same friends we can still be friends if you want but thats all i have to say ig

Thomas' heart dropped.

He kept re-reading the message over and over. Tears rolled down his face as he just stared blankly at his screen.

He blinked furiously, wiping at his eyes, his lungs feeling like they had collapsed.

He felt numb, he couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it.

Only moments earlier he had been so happy, imagining seeing Newt again. Letting Newt scoop him into his arms and kissing him until they were both panting and out of breath.

He remembered dreaming about their future together, where they moved into an apartment together, and adopted a cat, and were just so happy together.

All of that was gone now, impossible. They were over. Their entire relationship ended in a text, sent on a whim at 4 am.

His heart felt shattered as he lifted his phone up again, his fingers shaking violently as he typed.

Thomas
Oh
Yeah
Yeah that's fine I understand

Only he didn't understand.

Just a few weeks ago they were flirting, and joking, and sending 'I love you's.

Now it was over.

He didn't understand. He wanted to know why. Did he do something wrong ? Should he have built up the courage to meet up sooner ? How long has Newt been wanting to break up for ? Could he have done something ?

His heart broke more and more with each question.

He sniffed, wiping his face on the back of his sleeve.

He slowly scrolled up, through their messages. He sighed, seeing how many over the last few days had been from him. He had sent countless texts, saying hi in the morning, saying good night before he went to sleep, and just making sure that Newt was taking care of himself. There were so many days where Newt hadn't responded to anything, and Thomas figured he should have seen that maybe Newt was falling out of love.

He continued scrolling up smiling at their texts from a few months ago. All the random memes Newt sent him, all the pictures of their family cat, all the soft, sweet messages. His smile fell. There wouldn't be any more of that, he wouldn't be able to wake up to a good morning text from Newt, and he wouldn't be able to fall asleep on call with him. It was all over.

He knew Newt said they could still be friends, but Thomas knew that would just make it harder. He loved Newt so much, more than he'd ever loved anyone. He had wanted to live the rest of his life with Newt, and now he wouldn't be able to. He wouldn't be able to watch Newt move on while he himself was still stuck in the past.

He slowly shut his phone off, placing it on his night stand before laying back down.

He felt as if everything had just crashed back down on him at once. He buried his head in his hands and sobbed. He sobbed until his throat was raw and his eyes felt like they were on fire. He was distraught, and upset. But somewhere at the back of his mind he was angry. Angry at Newt and angry at himself. He was angry that he would never get to hug Newt, or kiss him, or run his hands through his hair. He was mad that he hadn't been able to keep Newt. And he was angry that now he wouldn't be able to do all the things that they had done together without thinking of him.

Eventually his eyes dried up, and his breathing somewhat returned to normal. He still felt horrible, he felt like he hadn't cried enough, like he would never cry enough. But he could no longer get anything out of his eyes and he just sat there.

He sat there, feeling sorry for himself, until he couldn't keep his eyes open any longer, and he finally let sleep take him away from his thoughts, if only for a few hours.
