The Pit is more empty than I have ever seen it before. Devoid of all people, every little noise echoes a thousand times against the stone walls. A summer breeze pushes its way down to the floor and up into the endless tunnels and hallways, lifting my blonde hair around my shoulders and into my face. I turn away from the force of the wind and see Tobias coming towards me.
"Never thought I'd see this place again," I say, before looking over the railing. I have to lean over it to get a better look at the chasm at the bottom. It's rushing water spraying the rock and splashing upwards in unpredictable waves. In that water, Al's body was found. His lips blue, skin swollen and pale as a ghost.
A hand finds my hip and I melt into it, twisting to look up at him. Tobias brushes my hair away from my face gently, then sets his chin on my shoulder. His dark blue eyes move over the Pit as if assessing it, not remembering it.
"You think someone's here?" I ask, turning fully so that I am completely facing him. Now his eyes are on mine, and I feel as if he is penetrating my soul with his stare. He puts a hand on the section of railing on either side of me and leans forward, his face serious.
"I think we need to be careful. There are more cameras here than in any other Faction." I nod, biting my lower lip. I notice that he isn't leaning far enough to see the floor, only the walls, and I smile a bit. His fear of heights could be unnoticeable if I didn't pay so much attention to him.
"Are you scared?" I ask, meaning to refer to his fear but it comes out as if I'm asking about something else. Regardless, he doesn't answer me, instead he presses a hand into my hair and kisses my forehead.
"Come on, Tris," he whispers, his lips now inches away from my ear. My skin prickles with desire. "We should probably get out of here." He pulls away, his hand withdrawing from my hair and weaving together with my fingers. He is careful to only grab my left hand, leaving my right arm dangling by my side.
"Ok." I follow him back into the tunnels and away from the Pit. A feeling sinks deeper in my stomach the farther we walk from it, like I won't see it again. I probably won't. I can almost hear the ghostly sounds of a Dauntless crowd getting quieter, but I know that there is none left here.
Tobias pulls me up a flight of stairs, into another hallway. I don't recognize this one and many others. There is so much I don't know about the Dauntless, so much I didn't get to see. Another pang within the pits of my stomach. I shift my eyes so that I'm looking at the back of his head and try not to focus on, or even think of anything.
Eventually, he pushes through a door and light showers over us. I blink a few times to adjust to the sun, then look around. This area is just as empty, however, its silence is far less unsettling. We break into a jog and maintain a quick pace until we come upon the train tracks.
"We have about two minutes," says Tobias, looking down at his watch tentatively. I shift my weight from one foot to the other, my entire body almost shuddering with anxiety.
We want to go to Amity. Amity is the safest place to go; it's the farthest from the Erudite and Jeanine, and the people there are more likely to take us in. The remaining Abnegation, Caleb, and Peter should already be there, assuming they made it.
I think I squeeze Tobias' hand because he looks down at it, then up at me. He uses where we connect to pull me into him, grabbing my waist with his free hand.
"Are you okay?" he asks me, blue eyes searching mine again. I blink and look away. I am not okay. I will probably never be okay again. I swallow the lump in my throat, shaking my head angrily. I think about crying. Tears fighting their way to my eyes until they're brimming over. How they would slide over my cheeks in rivers. The thought of it is almost disgusting to me, and I don't know why. So I battle them down and swallow again, as if to keep them away.
