Cheong-San and Ji-Ah rushed down the hallway. Tears streamed down Ji-Ah's face. Why did Su-Hyeok need to stay? When they reach the others, the girls struggle to break a padlock.

"I can't open it! Can't we go somewhere else?" I-Sak says in a panicked voice.

"Where? We're surrounded!" Dae-Su shouts as he blocks off one end of the hallway.

The girls continue to try, but it's no use. They were running out of time. The zombies were closing in. On-Jo walks up to the padlock and begins kicking it with her heel. After whacking it over and over again, it was clear that it wasn't going to work.

"Try harder!" Na-Yeon shrieks. Why does she get to yell at everyone when she's being a useless rat?

"That's what we've been doing!" I-Sak says as she angrily shoves Na-Yeon.

Without even thinking, Ji-Ah grabs the fire hose and slams the metal part onto the padlock.

SLAM! SLAM! SLAM!

Ji-Ah uses all her force to break the padlock. Maybe this wasn't going to work.

BREAK!

"Get in! NOW! GO!"

Na-Yeon pushes everyone out of the way and slides in first. Ji-Ah helps the other girls in first. She felt a pair of hands gently guide her in the classroom. The pair of hands pull her aside as Dae-Su slams the door closed. Ji-Ah turns around to see the hands were Woo-Jin's. She shot him a smile as a thank you. The tired boy slides down against the wall. The room filled with quick breaths and sighs of relief.

"Fuck!"

Dae-Su lets out a loud scream, and the students turn towards him. A bloody hand grips Dae-Su's head. Cheng-San climbs a table, trying to smack the hand away, but Joon-Yeong had other plans. The nerdy boy tried to help by using the fire extinguisher, but it broke more of the window. Soon enough, a swarm of zombie hands blindly reach down for humans.

"Let's block the doors," Cheong-San says as the monsters try to climb in.

All the students agreed and got to work. The room was silent, well besides the dragging and grunting noises. Ji-Ah kept thinking about Su-Hyeok. Was he ok? Was he thinking about her, too?

"What do you mean, you dropped the phone?" On-Jo mutters something under her breath, and Na-Yeon crosses her arms irritably. Ji-Ah head turns towards the girl. She really zoned out bad.

"Who cares? We have more important things to do," Gyeong-Su says, dragging a chair across the classroom. Ji-Ah gritted her teeth. She hated the noise of scraping metal.

"Who the fuck are you to butt in?"

SLAM!

The noise of the chair Gyeong-Su slammed on the floor startled Ji-Ah. In the background, the blood-hungry zombies grew louder.

"What did you just say?" asked a pissed-off Gyeong-Su.

"This is all your fault! You should've done your fucking job and held the door!" Na-Yeon scoffed. "One stupid mistake from you almost killed us."

Gyeong-Su lets out a humorless laugh. "Have you even lifted a finger today? You haven't done anything besides bitch and moan. So stop running your fucking mouth."

"Asshole."

Without answering, Gyeong-Su shoved the chair, hitting Na-Yeon's leg.

"You're so de-"

"That's enough!" Ji-Ah shouts from the other side of the room. She had enough for today. "Can't you see the situation we're in? God! Can you just shut up and move these fucking chairs?"

Ji-Ah wasn't usually one to yell or complain, but they needed to survive. Arguing wasn't going to help them live.

"I agree with her. Just cut it out, guys," Woo-Jin says, lifting a chair.

Ji-ah went back to stacking chairs. Her heart ached at the thought of never knowing if Su-Hyeok liked her back. She worked in silence until someone tapped her shoulder.

"Hey."

"Hi, Cheong-San."

The boy awkwardly opened and closed his mouth, trying to come up with something to say. Cheong-San scratched his head.

"You know he's going to be alright," he says to the small girl.

Ji-Ah nods her head.

"You know he likes you?" Cheong-San asks the girl.

"Don't lie to me, Cheong-San," Ji-Ah says, picking up another chair.

"I'm not, trust me," Cheong-San chuckles.

Ji-Ah rolls her eyes and playfully shoves the boy. Did Su-Hyeok truly like her? Ji-Ah walks over to the window and digs her iPod from her pocket. She places the headphones in her ears and turns up the music.

"I thought that I was dreamin' when you said you love me

The start of nothin'

I had no chance to prepare

I couldn't see you comin' "

Ji-Ah closed her eyes and let the music overtake her. Tears prickled in her eyes. She imagined what the day could've been like. Through her music, Ji-Ah could hear the faint noise of talking.

"Staff and students of Hyosan High School, I'm Park Sun-Hwa, the English teacher."

Miss Park's voice was radiant and confident, but now it was shaky and fearful. English felt like a lifetime ago.

"Something strange is happening throughout our school. Stude- former students are attacking ruthlessly. Find shelter, and stick together. Your safety comes first, so before you call any first responders, go somewhere safe. Wait for help if you can't escape, but if you can get as far away from here."

Miss Park chokes up. Ji-Ah didn't even notice tears were streaming down her face. She looked around, and her classmates felt the same way she did. Miss Park spoke again. But this time, her voice was bubbly, like it always was.

"Hey, kiddos, are you well? No one's hurt, right? I hate that I have no clue what is happening today, but what I hate the most is that I can't help all of you. Promise me you wouldn't put yourselves in danger, and that we'll meet again soon... alive."

At this point, what did it mean to be alive?
