"How did it go?" A man with black wire-rimmed glasses asked as North and Silas entered the mansion. His golden retriever got up and rushed over to them.
North bent down and patted the dog before dropping down onto the couch. "Fine Kota," he sighed, "typical storm damage."
"But?" Kota pressed. He could tell there was something else on North's mind.
"The pretty lady is hiding something," Silas smirked as he leaned against the wall.
"Pretty lady?" multiple men asked as they stopped what they were doing.
"Yeah, the client that called about a tree damaging her barn two hours away," Silas chuckled, "She is not only gorgeous but she has a big heart. She is apparently a vet but not your typical one, mind you."
"What do you mean by that?" Kota asked as he cleaned his glasses.
"She doesn't charge out the ass for her services, is what he means," North grumbled as he shot Silas a look. "She apparently not only has cheap prices because most of the people are single parents or the elderly but she also takes trades for payments. One guy showed up and for removing porcupine quills he's giving her the wood to repair the barn."
"Also for helping with an emergency c-section she is having the woman's two sons help with assisting in caring for the homeless' pets," Silas explained, "which she apparently does every few months."
"She sounds like a goddamn saint," the man with an orange shirt on.
"What else aren't you saying?" Kota asked. "And language Gabriel."
Gabe rolled his eyes as he pulled a dog hair off his orange shirt. "Yeah, whatever."
"She apparently left New York to come to care for her grandmother and once she passed she stayed on the farm and now runs a vet from it," North sighed.
"And this somehow makes you think she is hiding something?" one of the two blonde-haired blue-eyed identical twins asked as he typed on his computer.
"It was the way she was walking," North finally admitted. "And the way she looked when she didn't recognize us. She was too tense. She was way more comfortable with her clients."
"That's because she obviously knows them, dumb shit," the other identical twin rolled his eyes.
"Shut up Brandon," North glared at him. "Obviously she would be more comfortable with them but the way she looked when she opened her door and saw me and Si and the way she walked with us compared to the others was way too tense for just being nervous. She was too alert the entire time she was around us. I'm telling you she's hiding something. I know what the fuck I'm talking about."
"So what?" Brandon asked as he crossed his arms. "You want to stake out your client?"
"I'm not saying that," North glared at him. "I'm just telling you what I have already noticed so there is no repeating when you see that I'm right when all of you come to help me tomorrow."
"All of us?" Kota asked. "May I ask why you will need all of us?"
"It's a large barn for one," Silas explained. "It holds the feed for all her rescues and fosters. She has the homeless and kids help care for the animals on her farm as a way to give them purpose or a way to pay her back for her services."
"Plus we each notice things differently," North nodded, "so we'll get different readings on her."
"It's that important to you," the other with wire-rimmed glasses observed. His eyes were gray instead of green and he wore an immaculate three-piece gray suit. North nodded, "Very well. Make sure our schedules are cleared for tomorrow Mr. Lee and Mr. Weiland. Everyone, do whatever to make sure you are prepared. It is a long drive out there."
"Wait a minute," the man with red hair blurted out.
"What Nathan?" North grumbled. His mind was spinning and it was really starting to irritate him.
"If she already has someone bringing wood, why did she call you?"
"His men are straight out of high school and the veterans he hires he sends out to the Amish and Mennonite to help during this time," North shrugged.
Silas nodded, "The doc said this is their busiest time of season so she didn't want to take his men from him when they are needed for that."
"That's true," Kota nodded, "The Amish and Mennonite don't use power tools and even use horses for farming instead of equipment. It would make sense that they need extra help during farming and preparing for winter."
"Wait, are those the people that don't believe in electricity and shit," Gabe asked.
"It depends on the community," Kota nodded, "there are some that are hardcore in their heritage and do not believe in electricity of any kind and there are some that allow some modern equipment like phones in case of emergencies. It varies from community to community but they respect that they have their beliefs and we have ours. If we come across any you must hold your tongue, Gabriel, it will be very disrespectful."
"Yeah, got it," Gabe nodded. "Damn, she really is a fucking saint."
"You really think there is a reason she didn't go back to New York after her grandmother passed," the man with long fingers and perfect skin stated as he watched North. His brown eyes burned in like fire as he fixed his light silver button-down shirt before he started lightly playing a melody on the piano. North tensed for a second before nodding. "You think something happened in New York and whatever it is, New York holds the answer."
"Why can't it just be that after being in Oklahoma for so long taking care of her grandmother, she just didn't want to go back?" the other identical twin asked as he continued to type on his laptop. "Maybe she was just happy here and had already established a life here and she just didn't want to uproot her life once again?"
"You didn't see the fear in her eyes when she realized she didn't recognize us," North shook his head. "It was pure terror."
"Well I'm not finding anything suspicious about the vet," Corey shrugged. "She graduated top of her class, has excellent reviews on the vet she worked at in New York, her social media is filled with animals and some occasional posts about missing her grandmother who was more of a mom to her than anything. Nothing about a relationship, nothing to show she's scared of something, there's nothing there."
"Social media is easy to lie on, Corey, you know that," Victor shook his head. "After all, how many times have I used it to lie about my location or what I am doing when I am on tour."
Corey nodded as he ran his fingers through his blonde hair before he turned his blue eyes back to the screen. "I'll keep looking."
