North watched as she watched the Amish man leave with the horse he came with and two additional horses. One was hooked up to the buggy and the other was walking alongside the injured one. He had to borrow some of her things but he promised to have his wife Sarah return it when she brought the vet some dinner that night. It made him wonder if they fed her regularly since she admitted that she couldn't cook. That or she must order out or have lots of premade meals in her fridge and freezer. That wouldn't do for her, she deserved better.
Her cell phone rang so he watched as she answered it. Her back went rigid before she quickly hung up. "You good, Miss Em?" Bobby called over.
She turned around and raised her hand to cover her eyes as she looked up at the teenagers on the roof. "Yeah, wrong number. You be careful up there! It's getting dark!"
"Got it, Miss Em!" Joshua shouted.
"I mean it, Boys! I need your help this weekend so be careful!"
"Yes Ma'am," all three boys shouted.
"Do you need more help this weekend?" Sean asked as he walked over to her.
"How do you know what I'm doing this weekend?" She asked nervously.
Sean squinted his eyes then smiled, "North said your assistant told him you were going to help the homeless this weekend. I'll be more than glad to offer my services, give some vaccines, a quick check-up, offer some first aid kits, and things like that, if you don't mind that is. I wouldn't want to impose. More assistants means more help."
"Are you sure you will have enough supplies to see the people?" She asked skeptically. "The last time I saw around 150 pets. It grows each time since they talk to their friends and vouch for my respect towards them."
"Yes Ma'am," he nodded, "I tend to visit women's centers and offer my services for the mothers and children multiple times a year. I can make sure I have plenty of first aid kits and plenty of vaccines and supplies."
She nodded, "Alright Dr. Green, if you're serious then be here at eight in the morning."
"Doctor Emerson."
She turned to see two men and a woman walking towards her. A huge smile crossed her face, "Abraham, Matthew, Sarah, how are you?"
"We're fine, thank you," Sarah smiled. "Ezieckal wanted me to return this," she held out the ropes he borrowed earlier. "And your supper. It's chicken stew and rolls and an apple pie."
"Oh bless you Sarah," Audrey beamed. "I love your chicken stew!"
She blushed, "so you've said before. I'm thankful you enjoy it so much."
"We've come to get the remaining horses," one of the Amish men stated. "Benjamin asked us to get the ones for his farm as well, he's tending to the fields."
"Of course, take these," she passed out the ropes. "The six horses are those across from the barn. They will be glad to have a purpose again."
"Look like strong animals," the other nodded, "will be good working horses for sure."
"I'm sure they will be, Matthew," Audrey nodded. "They have been pretty restless these past couple of days."
"Customer decided they didn't want Benjamin's porch swing anymore," the other man stated as he walked two horses over to Audrey, Sean, and Sarah. He must be Abraham. "Abigail told Benjamin to give it to you as payment for the horses. She won't take no for an answer, Doctor Emerson. She's determined you have it. Told Benjamin to have him and their boy David to come hang it while you are at the center this weekend."
Audrey sighed and shook her head, "Fine on one agreement, Abraham. You take Joshua, Greg, and Bobby home for me."
"Yes Ma'am," he nodded. "We best be on our way then."
Sarah took a couple of steps to the barn and let out a loud whistle, "Let's go, Boys!"
"Yes, Mrs. Sarah!" all three boys said immediately. They knew that Momma tone in her whistle and her tone. They carefully hurried to the ladder and started descending the rungs. "See you this weekend Miss Em," they said as they hurried to the Amish group.
Audrey chuckled, "Bye Boys, no staying up late. Eight A.M. bright and early, bring your friends too. We are supposed to have a large crowd waiting."
They nodded as they followed the group toward the horse-drawn carriages. Sean noticed once she pulled her phone out that she swiped away some text messages from an unknown number before she dials someone, "Hey Betty, Sarah, Abraham, and Matthew are bringing the boys home for me. Would you relay the message? I have some patients I need to check on. Thanks, bye Betty."
"Alright, we have done what we can for today," North said as he walked over to her. "We'll be back in the morning if that is okay with you."
"Sure," She nodded. "Oh please take this apple pie. I still have half from the last pie she delivered. It will just go to waste here. Please take it."
"Gladly," Sean beamed as he took the pie she pulled from the basket the woman had given her. "I love apple pie. Oh, this smells so good."
"Oh shit, Doc found Doc's weakness," the man in the orange shirt burst out laughing.
"Language Gabe," Multiple men groaned and rolled their eyes.
She chuckled and shook her head, "Nothing I haven't heard before, I'm constantly around teenagers, no need to fret. These ears aren't delicate at all. Now grab a soda or water out of the fridge, take the apple pie, and drive safely since you got a ways to go before you get home. Thank you for your help and see you in the morning." She motioned to the house. "I got to feed these animals their dinner."
"Let us help, Doc," multiple men offered.
"More hands means getting it done faster," North pointed out.
Realizing he was right, she sighed and gave in. Once the outside animals were fed and put up for the night, they helped with the animals she had in the house. Only then did they leave. As they were driving back to their house, Axel called a group chat. "You were right North, she's hiding from someone."
North growled, "Fucking told you."
