There were things that I knew would happen to me as a blind person. I had a list of them and I was always prepared for them. Death was at the top of the list.
What I missed to note in my list was getting arrested. It never crossed my mind until it happened and my hands were cuffed. Not so long after I hung up with Olivia when a police car stopped in front of me. Everything happened in a hasty, with police yelling ‘hands up’ and another one knocking me from behind. I fell face flat and after they cuffed my hands, they dragged me to their car.
The police officers in our town were said to be brutal. I always thought it was for the better of the town but I could now disagree with it. I got arrested without any reason why. They never let me speak or think.
I couldn't tell where I dropped my bag, all I remember was; that I placed them on the ground, together with the walking stick so I could open the bag. I probably left them there.
I overheard one officer speaking saying they found one dealer. I still had no clue on what they meant. What deals had I been doing?
“Shameless girl!” One officer cussed. “Girls your age are out there studying and you are here, selling drugs!”
Drugs? I “Officer—”
“Shut up! Shut your little mouth, young woman!”
I jerked at his bulky voice. The anger in him could recoil your parts.
“She will tell us who the boss is!” Another officer spoke. The speed of the car could cause nausea.
“You are mistaken.”
“If I hear another word!” The officer seated beside me growled and I shifted a little. My hands already ached from the position I was seated in. With them cuffed on my back. “There must be a group of them.”
“And I suspected this street.” The second officer gritted. They sure had it in their blood that they wanted to arrest the drug dealers.
“Alert the street patrols, they must administer a tough hunt.”
At that moment, the only thing in my mind was Helen. I always wished to die but caught in such a situation, I stressed about her feelings. It could break her so much if anything happened to me, she would be left with only people who hated us. Uncle Peter was the only family remaining.
Helen fought for the two of us for years. I could think I was to give her rest but thinking of how she went through a lot for us, it would turn out to be useless.
I made a promise to her. She made me promise to hold on until she found a nice job. She had plans for our future, but I seemed to have plans for her future without me.
Life was hard, not for me, but for Helen.
I was brought back to reality when the car came to a sudden halt, I flew from my seat and banged my head on the front seat. I probably broke my nose but who cared, the sudden noises were much worse. Gun fires.
