The sun slowly made itself present in the camp, sun rays entering through the tiny holes found between the bushes and sticks that formed the entrance to the warriors' den. Treestripe opened his eyes, being greeted by the season's sweet scent of green leaves. The warrior doubted that one day he would get tired of that smell, especially now, when the leaves would start to fall, and the icy wind would take over the fields.
Treestripe rolled over, intending to go back to sleep, but was awakened by Mudfur, who nuzzled him.
"Treestripe," the older warrior called impatiently. "Sunnypaw is already awake. If you take any longer, she'll end up pulling out your fur."
Mudfur came out of the den before he received a response. The Siamese cat got up lazily, as if he wasn't full of things to do. With the season of leaf-fall almost there, the Clan was on double missions and patrols. Soon, prey would become scarce, and birds and other predatory animals would become more aggressive with the lack of food. Treestripe loved living in the country, and he wouldn't change his way of life for anything, even in facing difficulties.
When he finally emerged from the small hill where the warriors' den was, he was met with a tangle of bright orange fur. Sunnypaw had an angry expression on her face, and she was staring at her mentor as if he had two heads.
"There you are!" She exclaimed, swinging her tail from side to side. Treestripe rolled his eyes, sitting down on the ground. "I almost asked Mudfur to bring you by force!"
"You're talking too loud, Sunnypaw," the warrior meowed, washing his body with agonizingly slow licks for Sunnypaw's liking. "Let me enjoy this sun a little. You should too. It's a mentor advice."
The apprentice nudged the warrior with her nose, telling her mentor to hurry up. He just laughed, grabbing the apprentice and playfully pinning her to the ground.
"Let me go, you mouse brain!"
Treestripe did as requested, laughing at the apprentice. "Where did you learn these things? I don't remember teaching you that kind of language."
"Snakefang taught me a lot of them."
At the sound of his name, the gray tabby warrior poked his head out of his den. "Sunnypaw, you wasn't supposed to say it was me!"
The apprentice flinched, apologizing for having forgotten. Snakefang came out of the hole, pretending not to notice Treestripe's scolding gaze.
The Siamese warrior turned his attention to his apprentice, nodding toward the elders' lair. "Have you taken them fresh prey yet?"
"Oh... no, I forgot."
Before Treestripe could say anything, he heard a calm, patient meow approaching.
"Sludgepaw already did that." It was Sharpear, one of the best fighters in the Clan, as well as Treestripe's best friend. The cat was tall and had long ears. Its short black and white fur gleamed in the sun, highlighting its long paws. "By the way, you're up late, Treestripe.
"It's a wonderful day to lie around and share licks" He smiled, ignoring the complaints of Sunnypaw beside him. "I thought you were on night watch?"
"Wolfclaw took my place." He smiled at the thought of his friend. As a deputy, Wolfclaw was always keen to do his best, even if it pushed him to his limit.
"Aren't they supposed to be back already?" meowed Treestripe, looking around. Generally, the night patrol left as soon as the moon was high in the sky, and returned before sunrise.
"Now that you mention it, yes. They were supposed to be back."
They looked at the entrance to the camp with a bad feeling. Sunnypaw grew anxious, calling out to her mentor in a low tone. "Did something happen?"
