Once Wolfstar and his council decided they would form an alliance with the Shore, he notified his Clan. Some disagreed, while others seemed uncertain. But luckily for him, Crookedtail, an elder, supported and even congratulated Wolfstar on his decision.
"It's not easy to make a sudden decision like that," The elder meowed, his voice firm, even at his advanced age. "I'm proud of you, Wolfstar."
The leader tried not to collapse upon hearing the elder's words, even more so when Brokenfang agreed. Having cats who were once his father's friends support him and tell him they were proud gave him the courage he needed for this mission.
Before the sun even rose, Wolfstar was already halfway there, running through the fields at a precise speed. Sharpear had stayed at the camp, to watch over while Wolfstar was away.
Right behind the tabby tom, the shape of four other cats followed him equally quickly; Morningcloud, Tinypaw, Batwing and her apprentice, Crowpaw.
Even though Sludgepaw begged him to go with Morningcloud on the mission, Wolfstar told him to stay at the camp, with Sharpear.
It pains me to take him away from medicine, Wolfstar thought, remembering the way the apprentice's eyes fell when he heard he would stay at the camp with Sharpear. But he's still a warrior's apprentice. That's where he belongs. Wolfstar tried to calm himself with that thought.
Morningcloud was also shaken, however, she hid his feelings behind her serious face.
Tinypaw followed Wolfstar side by side, running masterfully, his huge white paws scratching the ground. Batwing and Crowpaw followed a little further behind, due to the apprentice's small paws. But he didn't give up; he continued to run after his mentor with a serious expression.
Wolfstar had been uncertain about the idea of taking such a young apprentice on an important mission, but, as he himself had said, apprentices should focus on training, and crossing the Black River into enemy territory would be of great help.
The sky was still dark when they reached the ravine that led to the Black River. Dark clouds were spread across the horizon, coming from the direction of the sea, signaling more snow to come. We have to hurry and get back before this storm.
Looking back, he found his warriors, patiently waiting for orders. The field behind them was covered in a thin layer of snow, leaving it painted in a mixture of white and green.
"Are we there yet?" Crowpaw asked, panting.
"Not yet," Wolfstar replied, looking at the ravine in front of him. "We have to go up and cross the Black River."
The apprentice opened his eyes wide, looking for Batwing's eyes. The black she-cat reassured her apprentice, murmuring that they had already done this.
Wolfstar signaled with his tail for them to follow him. Tinypaw took his place at his side, with Morningcloud on the other.
"Hopefully, we won't have any problems," The medicine cat tried to keep her voice steady, but the tremor in her paws was clear.
As they ascended the ravine, they stopped beside a pile of bushes, which ran the length of the Black River, which lay motionless only a few foxes' tails away.
Wolfstar approached cautiously, ears moving constantly in all directions looking for the screeching sound of a monster. Everything was quiet.
"I think they're sleeping," Tinypaw said, looking around.
"Maybe," Wolfstar called his warriors closer with his tail. "Let's all cross together. Crowpaw, just follow Batwing, okay?"
The black tom agreed, approaching the black she-cat. With all the cats lined up, Wolfstar waited a few more heartbeats, then shouting for everyone to run. Before they knew it, they were on the other side of the Black River, panting with fear.
