Wolfstar's body lay heavily on the ground. His unfocused eyes seemed to take on a gray tint with each passing heartbeat. His friends were crouched beside him, painfully waiting for him to come back to life.
Morningcloud paced back and forth, her eyes focused on the dead tom. Her mind formed several possibilities about what could happen to Wolfstar; all negative. She fears that, if he wakes up, the disease will take over his body instantly, and thus, he will enter a cycle of life and death until his nine lives are over.
Treestripe, still clinging to Sharpear's body, imagined himself alone, without any family. His friends seemed insufficient when compared to Wolfstar's friendship.
Sharpear was the only one who tried to be strong, both for his friends and for Wolfstar. He imagined the Clan, alone and desolate after the untimely death of the leader, once a formidable warrior and cat. The FieldClan deputy closed his eyes, squeezing them tightly, trying to get rid of the terrible thoughts.
Treestripe let out a loud murmur. "I can't bear to lose another family!" He crouched further against the floor.
"It's going to be okay" Sharpear wrapped his tail around his friend's shoulder. The Siamese tom said nothing. Sharpear looked over Wolfstar, sadness washing over him as he looked at the terrible state he was in. Determined to make his companions happy, Sharpear remembered moments when Wolfstar was present. "Hey, remember when Coalpaw died?"
Treestripe looked up, and Morningcloud nodded uneasily.
"It was raining... a horrible storm" Sharpear focused his green eyes on the ground as he remembered. "Even with Redstar making it clear that no cat should leave, he came to our rescue... even if it was too late. And he was the one who gave me the most support after Coalpaw died."
Morningcloud looked at the deputy and then at Wolfstar. Treestripe sniffed, raising his voice. "He was the one who created the plan to scare away the group of foxes that killed Rainsmoke's patrol..." Treestripe stared at his brother's back. "That's how he guaranteed us our position as warriors."
Morningcloud took a deep breath, finally sitting down. She lowered her ears, her eyes filled with mixed feelings. "He always said that no cat should hate each other and fight each other, no matter the circumstances..." She let out a growl. "And I fought with him... I pushed us away... I was so stupid!"
Sharpear and Treestripe muttered, supportive, although neither of them were able to calm down themselves. In total silence, the cats waited, they begged so that Wolfstar would wake up. Every heartbeat that passed, Wolfstar seemed to decline even more. His limp body grew cold and stiffened, his striped brown fur dry and abused.
But Wolfstar's body shook and convulsed, scaring the cats present. He swelled, his tail and paws flapping like leaves on a tree in the middle of a storm. And finally, like the sun that rises again every day, Wolfstar came back to life, sucking air heavily through his mouth as his mind began to function again.
"Wolfstar!" The three felines screamed together, quickly helping their friend.
The huge brown tom was breathing heavily, confused and weak. The cats meowed lamentations in his ears, happy and relieved, but still fearful for his lives. They helped Wolfstar to sit up, calling out to him.
"Wolfstar" Sharpear poked his leader's shoulder "Can you hear me?"
"You're okay!" Treestripe rested his head on his brother's back. "Thanks to the StarClan, you are okay!"
"Wolfstar, what are you feeling?" Morningcloud was standing in front of him, staring deep into his yellow eyes, looking for something that would indicate his state of health. The leader just shook his body, trying to steady himself. "I need you to answer me!"
