Later that night in the Heartslabyul Dorm lounge...
Riddle says to the others, "Queen of Hearts' Rule 529— 'If you eat steak on the night of a full moon, a cat must play the violin afterwards.'" Then sighs in relief, "Phew... Good thing we had a cat beastman in Heartslabyul. We very nearly committed an infraction there."
"It was less playing and more awkward screeching, IMO," Cater replies.
"Well, ah, there's no stipulation in the rules about what song they have to play or how well, so it still counts," Trey says.
Then Ace says, "Speaking of steak, the cafeteria menu seemed way higher-brow than usual tonight. Ace Steak, fried oysters, liver pie... What's the deal there?"
"We've got Beanfest coming up tomorrow! Gotta load up on calories before the big day, right?" Cater replies.
"That explains it," Deuce says, "And to be sure, I DO have a lot of energy after that dinner." He then gets excited, "I'm ready for some running tomorrow!"
"Did you get on the farmer team with Cater?" Trey questions.
"Yes, that's right," Deuce says, "As far as others from my class go, Briar, Sereia, and Grim also got put on the farmer's side."
"Then I guess Acey is the odd man out of the posse this time?" Cater questions.
"Yup, sure am. I'm on the monster team. Tanzanite, Jasper, and Trinket are on there too," Ace says, "Which is fine by me, really—chasing is way more my style than getting chased down."
"Sounds like we're teammates tomorrow, then," Trey says.
Ace asks Trey, "You're on the monster team, Trey? Does that mean the housewarden is, too?"
"Nope. Housewardens and vice housewardens always get assigned to separate teams," Trey says.
"So Housewarden Riddle is on the farmer team. I'll have to really step up my game, then..." Deuce says.
"That's some card soldier team spirit right there!" Cater says, "You gotta be careful, though, Deucey. You wouldn't wanna leak any intel to the monsters before game day."
"Now, come on. We're not even on opposing sides yet," Trey replies.
"Yeah, YET," Cater points out, "It's the guys who act all harmless that you really gotta watch out for!"
"Heh. I agree with Cater," Riddle replies with a smirk.
"Not you too, Riddle... Sheesh," Trey replies with a sigh.
"Still, tomorrow we get to go all-out against everyone we face, regardless of class or dorm standing," Ace says, "I'm pretty pumped for that."
"Oh, nooo! The big bad Acey-monster's scaring me already," Cater says. Then turns to the others, "Deucey, Riddle, we GOTTA get that harp for the farmers."
"Absolutely," Riddle says, "I'm certainly not going to spend the whole day being chased around for nothing."
"I'm a pretty good runner with plenty of stamina, myself!" Deuce says.
But then Ace says, "Too bad horsepower alone doesn't cut it. You gotta have the brainpower to make the right calls in a game like the one we're playing tomorrow."
Deuce grows irritated, "Rgh... Well, I'll make sure YOU never capture me, if nothing else."
"Save it for the game, guys," Trey says, "You don't want to get so worked up you have trouble sleeping tonight. And don't let the whole thing cloud your judgment. I don't want to see anyone getting hurt over a glorified game of tag. Understood?
"Okay, MOM. Now, if you're done nagging... We should take a pre-game pic!" Cater says.
Then he and the others take a selfie.
He then types on his phone, #Heartslabyul #Farmers&Monsters #TodaysFriendIsTomorrowsEnemy #Early2BedEarly2Rise. Aaand posted! You guys better slam that like button."
"Ahem. It's getting late. Don't stay up chatting too much longer, everyone. And remember, anyone who doesn't abide by lights-out time will summarily lose their head," Riddle says.
"Yes, Housewarden," The four replies.
