My eyes stalled on the last picture, The Buckley family. But I wasn't a Buckley? No she must've thought wrong when she ordered that picture. I shook it off and went to bed.
I woke up late the next morning by Maddie calling my name.
"Ellie" She called "you have someone at the door!"
I got up and pulled on my bathrobe and a pair of slippers before I walked out from my room. To my surprise Evelyn was standing there talking to Maddie. What the hell was she doing here?
"Ellie" Evelyn sounded surprised like she didn't know I lived there.
"What do you want?" I spat at her.
"Can we talk?" She asked.
I nodded.
"Please come in" Maddie said and stepped aside to let her through.
Evelyn stepped inside hesitantly like she would break something.
"Maybe you should change into something more daily?" Maddie whispered in my ear and I realised that I was in a bathrobe and slippers.
"Give me a few" I said and walked back to my room.
I got dressed and brushed my hair before I walked out to them again. Maddie and Evelyn were sitting at the dinner table talking. I walked over and sat next to Maddie.
"It's really nice here" Evelyn told me.
I knew she just wanted to try to make it better but I didn't want that. Just not yet at least. I gave her a nod.
"What did you want?" I crossed my legs and put my trembling hands in my lap.
"Listen Ellie I'm sorry" she started.
"You already said that" I told her coldly.
Maddie stood up.
"Maybe I shouldn't be here right now" she said and walked away.
"I got this letter from the police telling me I could go back to the house to get anything that I had forgotten and I was wondering if you wanted to go together?" Evelyn shifter uncomfortably in her seat.
"I got that letter too" I said.
"Oh" she paused. "Did you take skippy from the house when you left?"
My heart dropped, I had completely forgotten him. My little stuffed elephant with pink ears and legs.
"So we can maybe go and get him together?" Evelyn stuttered.
"Sure"
"Great" Evelyn smiled.
"How long have you had a place to stay?" I asked her, catching her off guard.
"5 years" Evelyn said, not knowing where I was heading.
"So do you have a boyfriend?" I asked her.
"Yes?"
"Does said boyfriend live with you?" I pushed.
Evelyn nodded.
"Since when?"
"Four years ago" she whispered, her voice shrinking under my gaze.
I scoffed.
"So you have a place to stay and a boyfriend." I continued. "Do you have something else? A car, a dog, kids?"
She froze when I said kids. I laughed. It was a hollow laugh because it was so ironic.
"Of course you have a kid too" I shook my head.
"Ellie I-" she started but I cut her off.
"Don't you Ellie me!" I hissed.
Evelyn paused.
"You don't get to come into my life again after you left me with him" I growled.
"I know" Evelyn put her face in her hands.
"And now you're telling me that you want me back?" I hissed at her. "I'm not some piece of clothing you can throw away when you get tired of it."
Evelyn shook her head in her hands.
"Of course you're not" she whispered.
"I can't trust you anymore" I said.
"I know I left you but I needed to get out" she cried.
"So did I" I hissed.
She looked up at me. Her blue eyes wet with tears.
"I'm sorry" her voice was shaking now. "I know I haven't earned the big sister of the year award but stupid as I was I hoped he would change for you"
I scoffed.
"Ellie I wanted you to meet my daughter" she sniffed.
That caught me off guard.
"What?" I stuttered.
"She's in my car with my fiancé" she sniffed again, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. "I want you to meet your niece"
I chewed on my bottom lip, thinking of an answer.
"Can I bring her up?" She asked.
I nodded. Evelyn stood up and walked out of the apartment. I heard footsteps coming from Maddies room but I didn't turn to look at her. I felt her hand on my shoulder and I heard her sigh. The silence was deafening as we stood there, waiting. I heard footsteps and then a gentle knock on the door. With a look at me Maddie went and opened the door. Evelyn was holding a young girl, not older than four, with both her hands. The girl had the same fire red hair and freckles as we did but she had blue eyes instead of green. Evelyn walked inside and her daughter looked around. Evelyns gaze fell on me as I stood in the middle of the apartment like a statue. I heard Maddie walk away and then it was just us and you could cut the tension with a knife. Evelyn sighed and put down her daughter on the floor and she walked right over to me. I knelt down when she walked over and she smiled. The girl put her small hand on a strand on my hair and stroked it.
"The same as mine" she smiled.
"Her name is Belle" I heard Evelyn say as she walked closer.
Belle turned to Evelyn and smiled. She spun back around to me.
"Who this?" She asked her mom.
"That's your aunt Ellie" Evelyn answered her.
"Bellie" Belle said and smiled.
I was an aunt to a girl I've never met before? She was cute at least I guess. Evelyns phone rang and she picked up the phone and answered.
"Yes hon" she said into the phone "okay I'll be down in a few".
She turned to me and Belle.
"We need to go baby" she said to Belle who walked back to her.
Evelyn didn't say much before she left but right before she stepped out she said;
"Listen I know you won't forgive me right away but I'm sorry and I love you"
I didn't say anything back. Evelyn gave me a sad smile and closed the door behind her when she walked out. She was gone and the silence was back, eating it's way through my chest into my lungs, slowly filling them up, making me drown. The world was spinning and I saw the world getting darker and darker before...
"Ellie?! Oh my god!" Maddies voice brought me back to reality.
She was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes. Her concerned face and her hands on my raised legs.
"You fainted again" she exhaled.
I groaned and tried to stand up but Maddie held me down.
"Don't stand up yet." She ordered me.
I sighed and put my head down on the floor. Of course I had to faint.
"Have you been taking your meds?" Maddie asked me.
I had completely forgotten about my pills. I shook my head. Maddie sighed but gave me a warm smile.
"Then I'm gonna give it to you every day so you won't forget" she told me and lent a hand to help me up onto my feet.
The world started spinning again so I grabbed Maddies arm, trying to not fall over. She made me go and lay down in bed and I obeyed her. She came in a while later with a concerned look.
"Ellie how are you doing?"
I shrugged.
"I've noticed you haven't said a word since she left" Maddie said.
I swallowed. My throat was so tight I couldn't speak. With a sigh I let my head drop. Maddie walked over and sat down.
"Ellie I think you need a few more therapy sessions a week" she sighed.
I nodded. Maybe that was a good idea.
