When I walked home the following morning I couldn't help to smile when I thought about the evening before. After the moment we talked for a while before going to sleep. Breakfast felt cheery even though we didn't say all that much.
The moment I opened the door into the apartment I could see Maddie sitting by the table.
"Hi" she said when I closed the door behind me.
"Hi" I answered her.
It was still quite awkward between us and the silence felt thick and slimy.
"You had a good time?" She asked.
"Yup" I nodded.
I didn't really feel like talking to her at the moment.
"Okay good" Maddie nodded. "So what did you do?"
"Just hung out and watched a movie" I shrugged.
Maddie chewed on her words but she didn't say anything else so I just walked into my room. I didn't feel like telling her what happened with Mila but I had a feeling she could sense that something was up. My room was just as I left it, or it looked like it at first but something felt different.
"Maddie?" I asked through the shut door. "Have you been in my room?"
"Yeah, I changed the curtains to fit the Easter vibe" I heard her reply.
That made sense. My blue curtains were exchanged with yellow ones with flowers on them.
"Thank you" I told her.
I flopped down on my bed with my phone in my hand.
Mila has sent you a snap.
My heart picked up on that and I unlocked my phone. I opened the Snapchat app and clicked on her snap. It was a video of her talking about her homework that she had missed and I couldn't help but smile at that. I responded with a;
"If you need help with said homework I'm just a phone call away :)"
Mila responded moments after with a;
"Or a 10 minute walk ;)"
I rolled over onto my stomach and felt the urge to kick my feet around like girls do in movies.
"Or a five minute run ;))" I retorted.
"I didn't think you ran?" She texted.
"Maybe I do and you just don't know it" I replied and sent a lot of surprised emoji's.
I felt myself giggling at her corny jokes and cute little comments so I forgot about the awkwardness between me and Maddie.
"I miss you" she texted after a while.
"But you saw me a few hours ago?" My heart picked up again as a smile crept itself onto my face.
"But stilllllll" She responded. "That was AGES ago :(("
My heart was drumming in my chest by now.
"If it makes you feel any better, I miss you too" I sent.
"It does :)"
I rolled over onto my back and sighed, still grinning from ear to ear. With my right hand I pushed away a strand of red hair from my forehead and sighed. I needed to tell Maddie about this, she would sense something anyways.
"Have you told your parents that you, you know, like girls?" I pushed into the display but waited a second before sending.
I clicked send and Mila opened it immediately.
"My mom has known for years, why?" I could see her concerned face in my head.
"I was thinking of telling Maddie" I told her.
"Ohhh" Mila responded and I watched her avatar think while she texted away. "You should if you want to."
"I do want to" I said.
"Then you should x" She texted.
"I will then, be right back." I clicked the off button on my phone and left it on my bed as I stood up. With fast steps I walked out to the living area. Maddie was still sitting by the kitchen table and looked surprised to see me.
"Mom can I tell you something?" I asked the woman, my hands shaking.
Mom. That just slipped out.
"Yeah sure." She said, furrowing her brows.
"Uhhhhh" I paced around the room, in search for the right words.
Maddie turned her head slightly to look at me.
"Ellie, is everything alright?"
"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine" I shook my head.
Come on you need to say it.
"I uhh" I stuttered.
Maddie looked at me with her big brown eyes and warm smile and I relaxed a bit.
"I think I like girls." I blurted, catching her by surprise.
"Oh" was the first thing she said.
Oh my god she hated me she is going to send me away to Siberia or something.
"It's okay hun" she said when she saw my face.
It was like I shrunk 3 inches when she said that. Maddie opened her arms, inviting me in for a hug which I gladly accepted. She put her arms around me and placed a kiss on my temple.
"So has this anything to do with Mila?" She asked into my ear.
I felt myself smile as I nodded.
"Oh my big girl" Maddie smiled. "So grown up already."
She let me go but took my hands in hers.
"That's what happens when you take in a teenager." I smiled at her.
"About that." Maddie turned to her phone and my heart sunk.
She handed me a piece of paper in an envelope and looked at me excitedly.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Open it"
I did as she asked and inside was a big paper.
"Certificate of adoption."
I felt my jaw drop as I looked at the paper. On it I could read my name and next to it was Maddies name. I looked up at her and noticed that she was beaming.
"I hope it's okay" she admitted. "Your dad was found guilty on all charges a few days ago so I thought that maybe that was for the best."
I nodded, trying to process everything.
"Is it okay?" Maddie asked.
I nodded.
"Yeah" I said. "It's amazing, thank you."
Maddie smiled at that and pulled me into another hug.
"You saved me Maddie." I whispered in her ear and I could feel Maddie smile.
"I love you kid" she kissed my temple.
"I love you too mom."
