I stepped inside. The house had a soft smell that I couldn't really put my finger on.
"Surprise" she exclaimed.
I spun around, feeling a smile taking over my face.
"Thank you" I smiled.
"So unfortunately I don't have a guest room yet" Maddie spun around "so you'll take the sofa this week. If that is okay"
"It's perfect" I said.
"I've never slept on a sofa" I said "or a bed for that matter".
Maddie stopped and turned around.
"What?"
I nodded. I had always slept on the floor, I didn't mind. That's what I always told myself.
"Well" Maddie said, trying to turn the conversation around "I got you a duvet and a few pillows, or if you want to you can take my room and I'll sleep out here".
"What no, I'm not taking your bed" I shook my bed "this is already way to much".
"Okay so dinner" Maddie walked over to the kitchen.
She opened the fridge but shut it quickly.
"So" she said turning around to face me "Takeout?"
"What's takeout?"
Maddie raised her eyebrows.
"Oh dear child" her tone had a joking undertone. "You don't know what takeout is?"
I shook my head.
"It's the best thing ever" she said, pulling up her phone.
She showed me a menu on her phone and after a while of "research" she decided on chicken nuggets with fries and cheddar dip for me and a chicken burger with fries for herself. Then while we waited she showed me around the apartment and that her door was big and secure with many locks. Before I got the chance to ask why she had so many locks the delivery with our food came.
The first few minutes of our meal was spent in silence. This food tasted way better than the hospital food I had eaten for almost two weeks.
"It's good, right?" Maddie said, her mouth full of food.
I nodded. It tasted better than anything I had ever had before. I just didn't know how to tell her that.
After dinner she made me sit down while she put away the dishes.
"Wanna watch a movie later?" She asked casually.
"Yes please" I said that louder than I had intended to.
"Popcorn or chips for snack?" She asked.
"I've never tried that" I admitted.
"Both then" she said, opened a cabinet and pulled out two bowls.
We sat down on the sofa together, bowls full of chips and popcorn on the table.
"So what about a Disney movie?" She turned on the TV.
"You seem to forget a lot" I laughed.
"Let's start with frozen then" she pressed a few buttons and a movie started.
I think I fell asleep about 15 minutes in to the movie. When I woke up it was morning, I had a blanket over me that I didn't have when I fell asleep. Maddie was in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
"Good morning sleepyhead" I heard her say from the kitchen.
I yawned and smiled. Maddie stood by the stove, frying some bacon. My stomach growled as I smelled the bacon.
"You hungry?" Maddie smiled.
I shrugged.
"Come, sit" Maddie gestured to a chair at the dinner table. I heard her putting something on a plate before she walked towards me. Maddie sat down in a chair on my right and put a plate in front of me.
"You - you made me breakfast?" I looked up and my eyes met hers.
"Of course" Maddie smiled at me "dig in!".
That must have been the best meal of my life. The crispy bacon and warm buttered toast with a cold glass of orange juice.
"Edible" Maddie asked.
I nodded, mouth full of food.
"So I was thinking" Maddie moved her fork around on her plate "maybe we could go and get you some new clothes later?"
I looked up.
"Why?"
Maddie shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
"Because the only pair of clothing you own are from the lost and found pile at the hospital".
"That's true" I laughed.
Maddie lent me one of her sweaters and we were off in to the big city. Firstly she dragged me in to urban outfitters. We walked out of that store with two pairs of jeans, t shirts and hoodies. Next up was H&M.
After all that shopping we were exhausted. Tired, we came back home to the door unlocked and a jeep in the driveway. Maddie opened the door.
"Hello?" She asked in to the apartment.
"Hello" a voice replied from inside.
"Buck, what are you doing here?" She said as we stepped inside.
A man came walking to meet us. He had brown hair and this bright smile that lit up the room.
"Oh I didn't realise that you had company" he said when he noticed me.
Maddie sighed.
"Buck that's why you had to stay at Chimneys for a week"
He raised his hands in defeat.
"I know I know but I needed to get some clothes".
Maddie stepped inside and I followed her.
"I know you" I said, looking at Buck.
"Oh really?" He turned his head to look at me.
"Yeah, you were at the car crash" I said.
"Ohhh yeah" Buck said, looking at me with a different set of eyes this time.
