Tess sat in her room, busying herself with her remaining homework. It had been several days since a wall had been put up and stopped her from visiting any of her friends. It had been a few days since seeing Gracie's smug face and getting locked in her own room by her own parents. It didn't make any sense to segregate the classes to Tess. It was chilly in her overlarge room which she made an effort to make smaller by spreading her very many belongings across the floor and shelves. The afternoon light finally died out, leaving her room bleached in the pale moonlight. There was a knock on her door. once again, she didn't answer, or even leave her desk. In protest, her stomach growled angrily at ignoring the call of dinner. The door opened tentatively. "I don't want you in here" Tess said in a quiet, cold voice. She wasn't sure if the person standing by her door could hear her words across the expanse if her room. "I- well, I thought you might be hungry..." Came Lexi's voice. Tess didn't turn around or acknowledge she had heard. A plate was placed on the floor and the door shut, lock clicking. At least the holidays were almost over. Then, Tess would really be at home, where Being smart and having poorer friends was normal. SHe finally turned around and found a plate of steaming soup. Returing to her desk with the food, she gratefully ate. Paper was sitting beneath the bowl. Tess hadn't noticed it earlier because it was so thin- it appeared Lexi had saved another newspaper from the fire. This time, it was a massive headline.
