As soon as I set foot in the base I knew something was wrong. The base had been raided. The lamps had been broken and the furniture had been overturned. There were blood splatters on the walls and the floor.
"What happened?" I turned to ask Immanuel, but he had disappeared. Suddenly the main door of the base was pushed open and there stood Ezra next to a woman with red hair who looked vaguely familiar. I ran to him and tackled him with a hug. Sarah ran to the woman and embraced her. As I ran to Ezra and hugged him I couldn't help but notice the woman's dark red hair that was the same as mine and her tender smile was just like Sarah's, but I decided to ignore the strange woman and put my focus on Ezra.
"Fae," he whispered. I smiled, and he hugged me, squeezing me tight. I squeezed him back, closing my eyes and savoring the moment.
"I'm so sorry Fae. I never should have listened to–" I placed my finger on his mouth, cutting him off. He laughed as I hugged him again. Butterflies erupted inside my stomach as Ezra wrapped his arms around me, enveloping me in an embrace. When we finally broke apart, I noticed that everyone was staring at us, I turned bright red with embarrassment.
Asher winked at his brother with a grin on his face. Ezra ignored him and looked around at the trashed base.
"What happened here?" I asked, holding Ezra's hand tight.
"I don't know," said the strange woman. Her expression was grim. "I'm Sarah's mother, by the way, my name is Leah Mokambi."
"As in General Mokambi?" I asked. She smiled.
"Yes, that is one of my many names. It is a pleasure to finally meet you all. I was chosen to be your guide." Ezra didn't seem to hear her.
"Aurora was here," he said, his voice filled with terror for his older sister. I squeezed his hand tighter.
"She'll be alright. She's a tough girl," Asher said, seeming unconvinced himself.
"What do we do, Mom?" Sarah asked.
" We must continue with our original plan. Adonai will guide us, and show us the way. Do you have the book, Sarah?"
"Yes, mom." She brought out the book and handed it to her mom.
"This is the Biblia, the Holy book of Adonai." Sarah's mother said. "Adonai wrote this book about his people and his son, Immanuel. It says:
'Trust in the Lord with all your and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths.'
We must follow the word of his Holy book and trust in him and he will guide us through." We all agreed and we set out on our journey. I held Ezra's hand as we walked.
Our quest was to set something that was stifled free. I wasn't sure what that meant, but I knew that we would figure it out. I couldn't stop thinking about the base. I wondered who could have possibly done it. Lucifer? Or the government? It didn't make sense Lucifer had been occupied with fighting Adonai's army, and how would the government have found the base? Who else could it be? Was there another enemy out there? And if so, Who? Why? These questions and many others rushed through my head, but I was too tired to answer them, so I just walked. I was content to be with Ezra and just walk to wherever Adonai would take us.
After five hours we finally stopped walking and set up camp in a field. I lay down next to Ezra and fell asleep instantly.
I awoke in the middle of the night to a sound I had never heard before. I was a city girl, and I had never been in the country before Ezra kidnapped me and brought me to Mr. Plumber's house and then Adrielan's Guard Base. I sat up and went to see what the noise was. It was dark, darker than I had ever known was possible. I spotted Leah standing up a short distance from our camp, gazing at the moon. I joined her.
"This world is beautiful, Fae Cahira, enjoy it." She said as I came up behind her.
"Okay," I said. I wasn't sure what else she wanted me to say.
"Adonai created it long ago for us to live in. He loved us so much that he created the most beautiful world imaginable for us." I didn't reply. I just asked.
"Who attacked the Adrielan's Guard Base?" She looked at me and sighed.
"Fae, Adonai created this world to be perfect, but we, his creation, decided to make it evil. Lucifer may be the most evil one, but that does not mean there are no other evil things that rome this world. There is something named Hewa that is neither a man or spirit. It is a way that infects all people. Many people have been infected by Hewa, and they want to kill those who are not infected , especially the Adrielan's who refuse to follow its ways. Hewa is what turned Lucifer from Adonai's ways. Lucifer used to follow him, but Hewa has pushed Lucifer far from those times and actions. Hewa itself is what makes a person evil. Hewa is what made man turn from Adonai and accept an evil world."
"What makes Hewa so powerful?" I asked.
"Adonai created us so that we would have free will, he would not control our decisions. Lucifer tempted us, and we were not powerful enough to stop him and the Hewa within him. Hewa has no power over Adonai, but we are weak and Hewa is much stronger than us alone."
"What can stop Hewa?"
"Only Adonai, Fae. We will do our best, but every single one of us has Hewa within us. Remember that. Now go to sleep, we have a long day ahead of us."
I listened to her instructions and returned to Ezra, however my heart was uneasy, my head full of questions, and it took many hours for sleep to overtake me.
