The New Generation of Divergence

Chapter 3

Carenna POV

Katelyn and I rush to our lockers. 

Hers is right next to mine. She quickly gets her stuff, then starts to walk, stops, and waits for me. I take my time getting my science stuff. I slowly take out one book, then even slower I grab my pencil bag. I do this to annoy her and one other reason.

"Come on hurry before he gets here" she says in a panic.

"No,no" I say in a sing song voice. "I'm taking my sweet time"

I smile at her then look the other direction. Right on time.

Then Katelyn sees what I'm looking at and gives me a death glare. I simply smile at her.

Andreas son of Uriah, the guy I think Katelyn likes (not totally sure), comes down the hall way. His locker is on the other side of Katelyn's so I keep my smirk. He comes up and unlocks his locker. "Hey" he says to us. 

"Hey" we say back.

"Are you exited for the aptitude test?" he asks.

"Try nervous" I say.

 Lina walks up to us.

"Your nervous?" Andreas and Lina ask.

"Well yeah" I say. "What happens if we get a faction that isn't dauntless?"

"You go to that faction, and never see us again" Lina jokes. "C'mon you know you'll get Dauntless! We all are gonna get Dauntless!"

"Who do you think is gonna be ranked first?" I ask.

"Me!" Katelyn, Lina, and Andreas all say at once.

The bell rings.

"We'll see about that!" Lina says walking to class.

"Good luck on your aptitude test" Andreas says.

"Thanks you too" I say walking to class with Katelyn.

When he's out of earshot I ask Katelyn.

"What faction do you think you are going to get?"

"Dauntless of course!" she says. "Or Erudite.."

"You could also get Abnegation" I say.

"Yeah I know" she says. Kateyn's mother, Tris, was Abnegation then transferred to Dauntless.

"You could get Candor or Erudite" she says to me. 

I knew I could get Candor, but I never thought about Erudite. Since my dad, Will, was from there I guess I could get Erudite. I dismiss the thought. I'm not smart enough for Erudite. I'm not smart enough to even date an Erudite!

"Hey" I say to Katelyn before we walk into class. "Let's both stay in Dauntless regardless of are test results" 

"I will" she says. "My mom and dad are instructors and so is your mom and Andreas' dad"

She stops at the door and lets me walk in front of her. "Besides there's no reason to leave".

I look back at her and nod but I keep walking and I run into someone. All my books fall with a bang! I look up to see who I ran into. He has blonde hair that barely covers his blue eyes. He looks familiar. Then I look at what he's wearing. Blue. He's from Erudite. I bend down to get my books and he tries to help. Then I realize who he is. 

"I don't think we've officially met" he says. "I'm Gabe Prior"

"Yeah I know I've seen you around school" I say. "I'm Carenna"

Katelyn looks at Gabe with a death glare and walks to her seat. I smile at him and walk to the seat next to Katelyn. Gabe walks back to his seat. From where he's sitting he smiles at me, but I know he's out of earshot, then he goes back to talking to the Erudite.

"I told you never to talk to him!"  she says.

"Hey he bumped into me" I say.

"Still!!!"  she says."He's an evil Erudite!"

The teacher walks in. 

"Today class we will be taking the aptitude test, instead to your regular class"

Usually the dauntless would cheer for no class, but I think their even nervous too.

We walk out of class and into the school cafeteria and join are fellow faction members at a table. No one talks.

An Erudite with a clip board says names to go first, two from each faction.

"Oliva Tucker and Eliza Smith" the erudite says. Two Candor girls get up.

"Lindsey McGuire and Maddison Hill". Two Amity girls get up

"Andrew Reed and Brooklyn Roberts". One girl and one boy. Abnegation.

"Malia Mathews and Gabriel Prior" from Erudite.

"Katelyn Eaton" the Erudite says. I look over at Katelyn who gets up. Then the Erudite calls my name. I get up and walk with Katelyn, my hands shaking.

I walk down the hall way with Katelyn. We both look at each other before we step in the room.

When I walk in the room an Erudite woman stands getting the test ready. She has short blonde hair that cups her face. She has celery green eyes that study the computer. She's from Erudite. I recognize her now. Her name is Cara. I remember my dad saying something about her being on the Erudite board. If I'm divergent I'm so dead.

She looks at me. I walk over to the chair I'm supposed to sit in and sit in it. She hands me a little drink. "It's for the test" she says. She knits her eyebrows. She has a little crease between her eyebrows. "Do I know you?"

"Depends" I say. "Do you know most dauntless?"

"No I only know my brother and his wife" she says. "You might know their daughter"

"What's her name or what does she look like?"

"I don't know I've never meet her" she says. "My brother is Will and his wife is Christina,  he works in the control room and his wife works as-"

"Dauntless trainer" I say. 

"Oh so you do know them?"

"Yes" I say. "I'm Carenna. And Will and Christina are my parents"

"Oh well it's nice to meet you" she says. "Now time for the test".

I drink the drink. Then slowly I begin to fade into the test.
