Chapter 3 :Hoochie Mama

The dim glow of a streetlight filtered through the blinds, casting a soft hue in Star's apartment. The air was thick with the scent of weed as she sat on the edge of her bed, rolling a blunt with practiced fingers. The rhythmic sound of children's laughter echoed from the living room, a stark contrast to the haze of smoke and secrets that enveloped Star's world.

Star's hazel eyes gleamed as she took a long drag, the smoke swirling around her in a momentary wisp. She cradled the cell phone between her shoulder and ear, fingers moving as her long acrylic nails swayed deftly as she attempted to gossip with Fiona, her best friend and partner in the unpredictable dance of their lives.

"Yeah, girl, you won't believe what Vito's got brewing" Star exhaled a cloud of smoke as she spoke into the phone, "He wants us to round up more girls for his little side hustle. Says it's the ticket to the high life."

On the other end of the line, Fiona's laughter echoed through the phone. "Girl, you never cease to amaze me. What's the catch this time?"

Star chuckled, the sound laced with a mix of amusement and resignation. "You know how it is. These politicians throw these fancy parties, pay for a good time with the girls, and then shove most of the girls into high-paying gigs they ain't qualified for to do their dirty work. It's the game we're playing now."

As the kids ran around the living room, their chaotic energy forming a stark contrast to the hush of the conversation, Star couldn't help but feel a twinge of detachment. These children, bouncing off the walls with innocence, were a stark reminder of a life she hadn't fully embraced. The nanny and her parents took on the responsibility of raising them, leaving Star to navigate the unruliness.

She took another hit from the blunt, the edges of her reality blurring as the smoke filled the room. "Fiona, I need you on this. Vito's got a plan, and we need more girls in the mix. It's time to level up."

Fiona's voice crackled through the phone, an unspoken understanding threading their conversation. "You know I got you, Star. We've been in this together since day one. Let's make this move, but you owe me some details."

Star smirked, exhaling smoke through her nose as she leaned back against the pillows. "Oh, girl, I'll spill all the tea. Just get ready for the ride. We're diving deep into the money bag, and there's no turning back now."

As Star continued to roll blunts, pop percocet, and sip on her drink, she and Fiona continued to discuss details of Vito's plan.

With a half smoked blunt still smoldering in the ashtray, Star moved with hurried determination, navigating through the haze that lingered in the air. The phone call with Fiona was abruptly cut short as Star leaped into action. She sprang from her bed, lighter in hand, racing against the ticking clock of her mother's imminent arrival.

The kids, still reveling in their youthful cheerfulness, scampered underfoot as Star barked orders, attempting to restore some appearance of order to the chaos. Her fingers danced across surfaces, frantically dusting away the traces of her illicit pursuits. She kicked discarded clothes into corners, a futile attempt to mask the disorder that continuously clung to her lifestyle.

Star reached for incense sticks, their fragrant smoke becoming a desperate attempt to mask the odors that lingered. She lit them with a quick flick of a lighter, the sweet scent mingling with the lingering marijuana haze. The apartment now carried the ephemeral promise of calm, a deceptive tranquility that veiled the tumultuous reality.

The doorbell chimed, and Star's heart skipped a beat, Quickly, she sprayed air freshener, attempting to mask the lingering scent of her escapades.

"Hey, Ma," Star greeted her mother with a strained smile, her eyes darting around the apartment, searching for any overlooked evidence of her nightlife. "The kids are ready, just let me grab their things."

With the kids' bags in tow, Star ushered them towards the door. Her mother, blissfully unaware of the unsettled currents beneath the surface, thanked her for watching the children.

The door closed, muffling the sounds of Fiona's laughter on the phone. Star, left alone in the aftermath of her rushed cleanup, couldn't shake the tension that was still in the air. Star's mother, a preserved church-going lady with a heart of gold, remained blissfully unaware of the hoochie mama her daughter had become. To her, Star was the responsible one, watching over the kids and managing the household. "Girl, your mama still don't suspect a thing, does she?"Star chuckled, a bitter note of irony coloring her laughter. "Nah, she thinks I'm the perfect daughter.

The night, a silent witness to her struggles, unfolded with a mix of secrets and lies. The city outside, with its secrets and shadows, watched as Star embraced the night, a hoochie mama masked in the complexities of her own making.
