Chapter Six: The Witch Hunt
Karina
Karina lay in her hospital bed, the stark white walls of the medical center, a stark contrast to the gritty reality of Lake City's streets. Vito had sent his cousin Francesca to kill her that night at her brother's graveside with a failed attempt. Her body bore the bruises of the recent attack, along with a hangover from all the Hennessy she drank, a brutal reminder of the dangers that lurked in the shadows. But Karina was no stranger to violence - she had faced it head-on, leaving her assailant with scars of their own.
Vito's ugly burnt-faced cousin, Francesca, had been the one to strike, a pawn in Vito's relentless game of power and control. But that witch had underestimated Karina's strength and resilience, falling short in her attempt to silence the heroic figure who had become a thorn in Vito's side.
As Karina reflected over the events that had led to her hospitalization, her thoughts drifted to Vito. The once charismatic community activist had begun to unravel, his erratic behavior becoming increasingly public. His threats against public officials, once veiled in privacy, are now spilled forth in a torrent of rage and desperation.
Karina knew that Vito's descent into madness was tied to her own relentless pursuit of justice. She had observed him meeting with Star Johnson. Vito's visits to meet Star at the bank and at city council meetings had only fueled Karina's suspicions.
"What are you up to, Star Johnson?" Karina murmured to herself, her gaze fixed on her iPad as she delved into the depths of the internet. A Google search led her to the Columbia Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller's Office, where she began to sift through public records, searching for a clue to Star's elusive motives.
As Karina began to piece together the puzzle of Vito's machinations and Star's involvement, she knew that her mission had taken a turn. She would soon be discharged from the hospital, having spun a tale of a random robbery gone wrong to throw authorities off the scent. But Karina had other plans - she wanted Francesca all to herself, to extract the truth from her about Vito's and Star's motives.
Karina's hospital room felt stifling, the sterile walls closing in on her as she lay in bed, her body a map of bruises and cuts. As she scrolled through the Google search results on her iPad, she knew that her next move had to be calculated.
"Lay low, Karina. Heal up and plan your next move," she muttered to herself, the words of determination. She needed time to strategize, to plan her witch hunt against Vito and his cohorts.
The city outside continued its relentless pace, the urban symphony of sirens and distant voices a reminder of the chaos that awaited her beyond the hospital walls. But Karina knew that she couldn't rush into battle unprepared. There was only one way to catch a lurking crow, and that is with bread.
As she plotted her next move, Karina made a decision to bide her time. She would use the time to heal her body and sharpen her mind. The streets of Lake City held their secrets close, but Karina was determined to uncover them one by one.
The hospital staff bustled around her, their voices a distant murmur as Karina drifted into a restless sleep. Dreams of vengeance and justice danced in her mind, fueling her determination to bring down those who had wronged her and her family.
When she awoke, the sun was setting, casting an orange glow through the window. Karina knew that her path was set. She would heal, she would plan, and then she would strike. The city's shadows whispered their secrets, and Karina listened, her resolve unshakeable.
With a steely resolve, Karina prepared to leave the confines of the hospital, her body bruised, but her spirit unbroken.
Later that day, Karina was released from the hospital as her family came to pick her up, her mother demanding her to get rest. Laying in the bed wouldn't stop her. She had plans to reach out to Dre and his computer geek friend in West Palm as they were always willing to get Karina what she needed as they wanted justice for Karina just as bad.
Karina's determination burned like a wildfire, consuming her doubts and fears. She knew that her witch hunt would end in fatality, that there would be bloodshed before the truth was revealed. But she was willing to pay that price, to sacrifice everything for the sake of justice.
