I didn't like the cold. We had no heating, no extra blankets, no warmth in my house. Everything was blue from my fingertips to my lips. I had no parents to wrap me up warm and distract me with their love and affection. Instead, I just had an empty house, that hadn't been touched in months. The rent man came round, leaving notes of eviction warnings every now and then, but nobody stepped foot in the flat.

I used to live with a woman, I didn't even know her name, but she left. She never loved me but she was there atleast. Now...she's gone and I don't know where

Being eight years old, alone in Manchester, I was scared as you can well imagine. But, when that final eviction notice came, I knew that I couldn't just sit and cowar in the flat any longer. If they found me, alone, I'd be put unto care. So, I ran. Got on a bus and went into chatsworth estate.

I had never heard of it before, but it was one of the last stops on the bus so I didn't have many options. Seeing nobody at the bus stop made me feel abit better, just knowing that I wasn't going to be kidnapped right then and there, it gave me a chance. I clutched onto my coat, pulling it closer towards me as I walked a few minutes before reaching a pub. They had never been my favourite places, but the lights were on and I could hear people. Perhaps, alot of people would mean that I'd be safer, but protected by going unnoticed

When I walked into the pub however, I was quick to realise it was in fact not crowded. There was two people in there, behind the bar, cleaning it up. Instantly, both their heads turned my way but I tried to remain strong

"Hi. Are you alright?" A woman asked as I made my way to the bar, climbing up onto one of those high stools that always scared me so much

"Please can I have a fruit shoot?" I asked, handing her a little bit of money that I had found on the side of the road

"Sure. It's on the house" she smiled at me, the man was abit behind her, watching closely

"Thank you" I smiled, drinking the juice quickly

"I'm Karen. This is my husband, Jamie. Are you alone?" She asked me, after the man gave me a shy wave

"I'll go when I've finished my drink," I told her nervously, although truthfully, I didn't want to leave. It was warm. Warmer than outside. Warmer than the flat. Warmer than the bus.

"There's no rush. Do you want me to call anybody? Perhaps a parent or grandparent?" Jamie asked, walking closer and chucking me a bag of crisps

"No I'm fine thank you. Ill go now," I whispered, grabbing the crisps and getting down off the stool

"No wait! We can't let you go out there alone, it isn't safe. If the cold doesn't hurt you, then our neighbours certainly will. You stay here and I'll call the police. They'll sort something out"

"They'll send me to Foster care. Just let me go and forget about it. Please. I don't want social services taking me away." I could see them speaking to eachother through their eyes until they told me to wait where I was as they spoke privately

"We've got to call the police" I told Karen

"Jamie, we can't. We'll let her stay here for the night and figure something out, but we both know that the police will just send her to live with complete strangers" it took a few minutes before I decided. We went into the front of the pub where the girl was sat, eating a bag of crisps

"Why don't you stay here for the night and tomorrow, when we've all slept on it, we'll figure something out. Does that sound alright?"

"I don't want to intrude. I only wanted a drink" she whispered, tugging on her coat sleeve
