We snuck out of the apartment at around five am. It was a wonder we made it out without anyone noticing. We turned our phones off and drove, we'd find some lie to tell them tomorrow but right now it didn't matter. The two of us took the drive in shifts so we didn't get too burnt out, it was a long way there.Elliot and I spent the first half singing together to the radio, then coming up with song ideas. Some how, they mostly turned into outlaw country, I honestly wouldn't expect anything less out of us to be honest. I had forgotten how much I loved to sing until Elliot came along. He's made me remember a lot of the things I used to find joy in.
The second half however, we spent talking about the good parts of our past. He told me about his parents, how much he loved them, why they didn't speak anymore. He told me about his high school girlfriend moving on while he was in the military. He let me get to know every part of his past that made him who he was. Finally opening up to me, no more walls.
I told him about my adoptive parents, my tendency to get into fights at school. My ballet and Karate classes made me a formidable foe even as a 75lb 13 year old. Elliot only found amusement in that fact. He let me talk about my time with my daughter, why I made the choices I did.
The two of us accepted each other for who we were. There was something so genuine about it. A kinship that no one else could understand. Running away with him is the craziest thing I've ever done, but I think it's also the best.
It was about 8 at night when we got to the Vegas strip. We went straight to the courthouse to get our marriage license that we applied for that morning online. Our real identities were on the form, it wasn't for a con, it wasn't for show, it was just for us and it was real. I kept waiting for him to back out, but he didn't. Every step of the way he smiled at me.
After we left the courthouse, we went to the first chapel we found with Elvis on the sign. The two of us were anxious as we walked in. I was wearing the only white dress I owned, a silk evening gown I bought for a con. Elliot actually wore his tuxedo, he was taking it seriously. My hands were shaking as we walked up the steps of the chapel. Elliot took notice of it before stopping me at the top just before we went in.
"If you changed your mind I won't be mad." He whispered looking down at me clearly disappointed.
"I haven't changed my mind. I'm just worried you have." I whispered as he smiled at me. He picked me up twirling me around before gently placing me back on the ground.
"Let's go get married." Elliot's voice was almost excited as he spoke. He lips gently touched mine before he began leading me in like he was walking on clouds
The two of us waltzed in arms locked, and straight up to the desk. We happily paid our money owed, and waited for our turn anxiously. It took about two hours before it was time, this meant it was almost midnight when we walked through the doors to the chapel hall. Elvis was waiting for us at the end, we both took a deep breath looking at each other before looking back to him.
We walked arm in arm down the isle, stoping under the arch. The silk flowers the lady at the desk gave me were so tightly gripped in my hands, my knuckles were turning white. I was so terrified he'd run, I was terrified I'd run.
The officiant started the standard service, the two of us joined hands when the witness took my bouquet. My eyes were locked on Elliot looking for any sign he was going to run, instead he just smiled. The entire time the officiant was telling him the vows, I held my breath waiting to hear them leave his mouth.
"I, Elliot Spencer, take you, Carter Cline Ford, to be my wife, I solemnly pledge to you my loyalty and love, through all the days of my life." Elliot repeated the officiant and it was like I could breath for the first time in a decade. "To have and to hold you from this day forward; for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, so long as we both shall live."
