“Aw thanks, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one to see how mean they are... Do you always sit on your own then, if you don’t like anyone here?” Steven replied, looking around for someone who could be a possible acquaintance; he found no one, they were all either tarts or chavs who were now reciting some verse in a rap. Amy laughed at the question Steven just asked.
“Haha yeah, I always sit here on my own, I used to be like them in Year 7, you know, what with trying to fit in and make friends, but I didn’t like their personalities, it was all fake and cold. So one day I found something that made me feel welcome and didn’t judge me, it was music, the rock and metal genre. From then onwards, none of these people have even shown a liking towards me, in fact, they’ve made my life a living Hell...” Amy stopped herself; she’d only just met Steven and she was already confiding in him her biggest problem. She wasn’t sure if he was completely trustworthy because of his confidence; he could easily be pretending to be on her side, find out all her problems and then blurt them out to her enemies. Amy caught her breath abruptly; this was a signal to Steven that she thought she had shared too much, Steven nodded slightly and turned his back even more to the rest of the class so he was now looking directly at Amy. He gazed into her eyes, trying to find the light behind them...
“Look, I’m exactly like you, Amy; I love rock and metal, I’ve been there, and I still am stuck in this rut of constant hatred and judgement from people like the idiots behind me... Honestly, I would never do anything to make you feel even more upset than you do now, I can see it in your eyes, and you’re not happy, am I right?” Steven whispered to Amy, still looking at her, trying to find signs of her unhappiness. He could see it, Amy could see it, but for some reason no one else could. Amy sighed and looked down at the table, at her pale hand lying limp. Steven moved his hand closer to Amy’s and moved his head lower to see her eyes. “Hey, hey Amy, it’s alright, you don’t need to feel upset anymore. I’m always here to talk, okay?” he reassured her as a small teardrop fell silently and quickly from Amy’s closed eyes. She wiped it away quickly with her hand and looked up at Steven, the new light in her life, she suddenly felt more trust in him as well.
“I’m sorry Ste-” She began but Steven cut her off
“No, no don’t apologize for your feelings, if anyone should be apologizing it’s them lot for making you feel this way, or me... for making you cry...” Steven faded out, and looked away as he realised that he’d caused the tears. Amy shook her head and took Steven’s hand that he’d moved closer to Amy on the desk.
“Steven... it’s not your fault, you’re right it is their fault, we’ll make them pay one day, don’t blame yourself” Amy assured Steven, she looked around and saw Mrs Broadway turning around and making her way over to the two of them in the corner of the room; Amy quickly let go of Steven’s hand and wiped her face to be sure there was no sign that she had been crying. Steven looked to see what had caused Amy to change her position and saw the teacher; he rolled his eyes, fluffed his hair up with both hands and looked at Mrs Broadway innocently as she stood behind him.
“What are you two up to?” The old teacher inquired sharply. She peered over the two teenagers, who had moved swiftly away from their close discussion.
“Nothing, just sat here, getting to know Amy, Miss, why d’you ask?” Steven replied coolly as he leaned back in his chair slightly. Mrs Broadway frowned at his cockiness.
“Mr. Battelle, don’t be so sure of yourself; I won’t be there to help you if someone were to use your confidence against you” She shook her head all frilly and walked away to her desk where she sat and frowned at Amy and Steven from a distance. Steven looked back at Amy, smirking at how Mrs. Broadway had reacted
“Think that sorted her out, am I right?” Steven chuckled and looked for something else to talk about with his new friend “So um... I don’t know my way around here... and the bell’s about to go, do you think you could show me to my classroom?” Steven whispered; he didn’t want the people behind him to hear he didn’t know where he was going; they could trick him into going the completely wrong way and he wouldn’t know they’d done it until it was too late.
“Yeah sure, I’ll definitely help you, Steven” Amy whispered back, she didn’t smile because she was still in the environment she hated, if it were anywhere else, like a field or just outside the school gates Amy would have smiled at Steven.
“Thanks, Amy” Steven looked at her pleased just as the bell rang.
“Where do you have to be now?” Amy inquired as the whole class rose and the other students legged it out of the door and started jumping onto each other in excitement to cause havoc in the corridors. Steven looked at his timetable he had folded up in his blazer pocket.
“Um... Ooh two hours of Music, that’s ace!” Steven exclaimed; he obviously shared another thing in common with Amy and that was a pure love for music, and also having double Music first thing that day
“Oh I have that too! In M2, or rather, Main Block 2, Main Block 2’s its full name” Amy explained as they wandered out of the form room and started on their way down the wide and draughty corridors.
“So there’s a Main Block... an East Block and a West Block?” Steven asked slowly as they walked past the library and carried their way down the stairs.
“Yeah that’s right, all of our lessons are in Main Block today so we don’t need to go outside...” Amy replied. She wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing; Amy loved going outside as it was open and had beautiful scenery but at school the scenery was the metal fences and the chavs running around playing football or smoking, which wasn’t a very pretty sight at all. Amy and Steven kept close together, side by side, as they walked past the hall that had the assembly and turned a corner to a long row of doors with an “m” and then a number, Amy pulled Steven back towards her by his sleeve when he started going towards M3 instead of M2. They reached the door and Steven pushed it open and let Amy walk in first.
