Later that day, when I got to the bar, I set my stuff down on a table near the pool table that we'd be playing at, then I went and grabbed drinks for us all.
"Hey Bill, I'm here to pay for last night and the first round."
"First round?" Bill asked.
"Yeah, Kat and Christy invited that girl Heather from last night. She's new to town and doesn't know many people."
"Huh..." Bill was quiet as he poured the drinks.
"What?" I asked.
"I mean, she's new to town, and she's cute." He shrugged his shoulders and placed our drinks on the bar.
"Want us to introduce you?" I said through a smile.
"Me? Oh, but I'm working and don't look nice right now."
"I'll watch the bar while you get ready." Bill was out the door before I finished my sentence. I heard a few snickers from the locals and I saluted with my drink. A few minutes later he came back in and ran to the bathroom. So far, no one needed anything. They wouldn't with how fast he was going. Just then the door opened and Heather came walking in front. As she did, Bill came rushing out of the bathroom and ran right into her.
"Oh! I'm sorry about that," Heather said, stepping back looking up at him.
"No, it was my fault," Bill said with a grin aimed at her.
They stared at each other for a few seconds awkwardly, "I'm Heather." She held her hand out to introduce herself.
"Heather," he said her name with deep interest and shook her hand. "Nice to meet you, I'm Bill."
"Bill," she responded in the same way. They looked in each other's eyes and before I knew it Kat and Christy came barreling in, knocking Heather into Bill's chest.
"Are you alright?" Bill asked holding her.
"Yes, thank you," she said close enough to smell his breath.
"Heather! Sorry about that," Christy said popping up next to Heather. "Oh! I don't know if you met last night, Heather-Bill, Bill-Heather." She gestured with her hand as she said their names, ignorant of them staring at each other. Then she leaned in and whispered, "Did you want to be on my team or Kat's?"
Heather snapped back, "Um, it doesn't matter." Christy looped her arm in Heather's and pulled her toward the table. "Nice to meet you," she said to Bill as she was dragged away. He waved at her.
'Did no one see the sparks flying between those two?' I thought. I looked at the other patrons, they all had the same confused look on their face.
I didn't say anything as I brought the drinks to the table, nor when I conveniently finished my drink really fast and told Heather to get me another. She jumped at the chance and ran up to the bar.
"Kind of rude making her get you a drink," Kat said. I kept quiet as I stared at the bar. Kat looked where I was looking and finally saw it. Heather was leaning onto the bar and Bill was right next to her. They were laughing at something that was said. I'd never seen Bill's smile so big before. "I might need her to get me a drink soon, too."
After Heather came back with my drink, Kat had just finished her drink and asked Heather to get her one next. This happened several times. Christy was still into the game, so she hadn't noticed yet. As soon as Kat's drink came back, we waited a few minutes and then I needed a beer, so Heather went back up to the bar. But this time, Heather was talking to Bill and pointing at us. Kat and I pretended like we were deep into the pool game.
"Jimmy, Kat, can I talk to you?" Bill said. Kat and I slumped behind him. Christy finally noticed we were stepping away and followed. "Guys, I've never seen you drink so fast before. Is something up?" Kat and I looked at each other, he hadn't noticed.
