We walked along the dusty roads to the other side of the street.

"Hey Vern, I have something to ask you, it's about Chris."

"I don't know, I don't really like talking about other people....."

"Vern, stop being chicken!"

"Okay, what is it?" He said sighing

"Where is Chris's mom?" I asked. He stopped walking and went all wide eyed. He turned and pointed to the top of the hill.

"What's up there?" I asked.

"Come on, I'll show you." We took a long hike up the hill and I saw something sad....it was a cemetery. I drew my hand over my mouth and gasped. There was a fence all around and headstones in the middle. Vern held the gate open and we walked in. I looked around and we walked to the back corner. There stood a headstone that said "Tippy Chambers" Tippy was an unusually name, like eyeball. Next to her stone, was five empty beer bottles with rolled up paper.

"Vern, what's that?"

"Those are letters, from the family. Eyeball, his dad, and the rest are from Chris. Ten years ago she died, in a car accident. She was.....she was....

"I know Vern." I could tell she was an alcoholic, and that's most likely why Chris's dad drinks too. I didn't know what to say, Chris was such a nice kid. The only reason he is the way he is, is because of his dad and he had no escape. He didn't think he was smart for college so he would never get a job and if he couldn't get a job he couldn't get paid and move away. He was going to be stuck with his dad forever it seemed like.....but would he really?

"Every month Chris will bring a new letter." Vern said picking up a bottle. "Except this one was from three months ago...." He paused and put it down.

"Did he forget about her?" I asked thinking he shouldn't. No one should forget there mother.

"No, he never he would. Trust me." I picked the bottle back up trying to shake the letter out.

"What are you doing?!?" Vern yelled.

"Vern, listen." I said putting my hand on his shoulder. "If it's truly the last letter there is a reason why it is.....so we are going to read it to find out."

"This isn't a good idea, I sense it!" He said looking at me. I ignored him and took the piece of paper out. "You are perfect for Teddy....I sense that too." I punched him in the arm. I picked up the letter and read

Dear Mom,

Last night I finally saw you in my dreams! I feel like when I write you, you come in my dreams and tell me what to do. I don't know if you know this but I really miss you! I think Eyeball and dad do too. I'm really sorry for everything that I have done, I'm just a Chambers kid I guess. I really liked playing cards with you too last night! I think I found a girl in this world who can actually be alive and be here for me. Her name is Madeline, she's really super nice and has done a lot for me. She has long brown hair and likes to write, she's nice to be around. Thanks for everything mom, I'll be okay for now.

Love, Chris

I LOVE YOU CHRIS, MOM
YOUR MORE THEN A CHAMBERS KID

Chris's mom actually had wrote back to him, but how did she? That's probably why I saw Chris and his mom playing cards in the light.....Vern and I headed back and closed the gate and walked along. I must be better then I thought.
