On our way up the stairs, Marcie stops me and pulls me around a corner. She peers her head around to look at someone, but I'm not sure who.

"Who are we looking at?" I ask.

"Right there," she points to a girl with black hair and dark eyes. She looks about five eleven. She's very pretty. "Vanessa Collins. I've liked her for so long. She hasn't noticed, but hopefully she will."

"Is she popular?" I ask Marcie, who is still staring at her. I snap my fingers in her face to get her attention.

Marcie looks at me. "Sorry. No, she mostly keeps to herself. She's a loner." I nod, understanding.

"You should ask her out," I say. Marcie's eyes widened.

"No way! Rejection is scary," she says, and we both laugh even though Marcie could never get rejected. She has the looks with her long brunette hair and brown eyes. She wears confidence like its her second skin. I could never be as pretty as her.

We watch as Vanessa walks away into the building. We start walking around the corner and into the building. Suddenly, all of my anxiety comes back to me.

What if I can't make any new friends? What if they all hate me? What if I get bullied again? I can't go through it again. I just can't.

I look over at Marcie to see that she is looking at me worriedly. I smile at her reassuringly because I'm an optimist. I can do this. I take a deep breath and look around. I got this.

"Do you need me to come with you to get your schedule and books?" Marcie asks me. I just shake my head no and say thank you. It took her a few more seconds before she was convinced I would be okay. I just kept smiling. As I'm walking, I accidentally bump into someone. I look up, and see it's a girl. I smile at her.

"I like your-" I was about to compliment, but she interrupted me.

"Watch where you're going, freak," she pushes past me, making me stumble a bit. But I regained my balance. I should watch where I was going. What is wrong with me. I breathe in deeply and smile. That was just a minor setback to a surely amazing day to come.

As I walk to the office, I start to feel a bit more confident. I smile at people. Some give me small smiles, others just look confused, and some just look plain out disgusted. I walk up to the front desk secretary.

"Hi! I'm here to get my schedule! I'm new. My name is Ophelia Andreas," I hold out my hand to the lady. She just looks at it confused. What is with people? When I see she doesn't make a move to shake my hand, I retreat. She looks through a stack of papers before passing me one with my name and classes on it. "Thank you! Have a wonderful day!"

As I walk into my first class, it hits me that I need to make friends. I look around for a spot and find one by the door and take a seat. This way if I want to leave, I'm close to the door. I look down at my paper and read over all of the information. I wonder how many of these teachers are nice? Guess I'll find out.
