As we're driving back to the school, Christian plays with my fingers with one hand and drives with the other. Once we stop in the parking lot, we just sit here in silence for a bit. I don't care if we're late to the next class. It's peaceful.
He frowns, his brows furrowed in concentration as he brings my hand up and rubs his thumb over the scars on my knuckles. Those were from when Joe forced my fist to go flying into the mirror.
He leans down and kisses each knuckle. I gasp from the soft feeling of his lips against my knuckles. Oh my Lord! I can physically feel the color turning my cheeks pink.
He looks at me as if he just realized what he did or maybe he feels sad. I know he once asked me what happened from the bruises, but he doesn't know. He can never know. He sighs a bit and kisses my hand. Then, he gets out of the car.
Just when I think he's walking away from me... he walks to my side of the car and opens the door, helping me out. I blush again and he smirks the tiniest bit.
"A-are," I stop myself and take a deep breath. "Are we best friends?" I ask him, quietly.
He nods quickly, not giving me anything else but that. I quietly cheer. I have another best friend other than Marcie.
With that, we walk up to the doors hand in hand. Ready to be done with the rest of our classes for the day.

The rest of the classes go by pretty quickly. Marcie and I walk out and wait for the boys in the parking lot. She tells me about her conversation she had with Vanessa. Apparently, Vanessa asked her for help with her math homework.
While she's in the middle of her story, I feel two hands shape my waist. I gasp. Who in the world- Christian!
"Hi!" I say with much more energy than he looks like he can muster. Christian looks at me, but once he sees my face there's no frown. Just a blank face. Strange. Good strange.
"Hey, Sunshine," he says.
I love that nickname. I feel like he represents the moon because the sun is bright and happy. The moon is dark. If the moon could talk, it would be grumpy. Like Christian!
"You remind me of the moon," I blurt. His eyebrows furrow, but his hands stay on my waist.
"I remind you of an ass?" he says, frowning. I giggle. Oh, he took it wrong. I smile which makes him stop frowning a bit.
"No, Silly! You remind me of The Moon. Because if the moon could talk it would be grumpy! And you're grumpy. And you call me Sunshine. The sun is bright. If it could talk, it would be happy." I ramble. He doesn't stop me. He just listens intently. When I'm done, he just hums and squeezes my waist tighter.
Marcie looks at me and winks, mouthing 'Oh?'. I just shrug. Christian doesn't seem to notice. He's busy listening to Mark sing the National Anthem because Mr. Adams said that he was offkey. I laugh.
