Quick Note: Content warning for this chapter specifically. Discussions of self-harm involved. If you'd prefer to skip this chapter, I'll post a synopsis in the next one that will cover the main plot points while glossing over the details of the difficult conversation. But if not... have fun you sinners!
It's a valid question, especially considering that Charlie and Vaggie look just as confused as I do. When I asked Lucifer how he knew my name it seemed to worry him. He now looks a little panicked.
"I-I-I-I." Lucifer stutters as he holds his hat. "I know everyone's name." He responds as he folds his arms in front of him with a confident smile.
"That's not true, dad." Charlie clarifies.
"Yeah, but she doesn't know that." Lucifer says quietly to Charlie, though I can clearly hear him. He seems like an adorable goof. I wish my dad had these qualities.
I roll my eyes. "Yeah, I'm absolutely clueless." I joke. "Seriously. Am I supposed to be here or something? Did I fuck up somewhere?" I ask him. "Was it when I stole that candy bar when I was eight?"
"Noooo." Lucifer trails out.
"Was it the boy in my fifth-grade class I punched in the gut because he said he was going to put gum in my hair?" I continue.
"Noooo." Lucifer clarifies.
"Was it because I had sex before marriage?" I continue questioning.
"No, it's none of these things." Lucifer tries to stop me.
"Keep asking, it's starting to get good." Angel says from the bar with a smile.
I give a glare over at Angel. He raises his drink at me and smiles, he's absolutely entertained.
"It's..." Lucifer sighs as he pinches the bridge of his nose. "Here, sit down." He recommends as he gestures to the couch in the lobby.
I take his recommendation and sit on the couch, along with Charlie and Vaggie. Surprisingly, Angel and Husk also come over and sit on other couches in the lobby. There was also the small one-eyed girl in the red dress that I still didn't recognize. Apparently, this is everyone's business now.
Lucifer looks around the room, realizing everyone has gathered. "Ooookay." He mutters. Well... almost everyone.
Alastor emerges from the shadows and stands next to me, not taking a seat on the couch. Now we have everyone! "This seems interesting." He chimes in.
Lucifer's demeanor seems to change once Alastor enters the room. There's a hint of... anger, or resentment. Something not positive. Luckily, it seems like I'll still get my explanation!
"Your... dad... is struggling, a lot, with his mental health. I know this is something you're aware of." Lucifer starts off. No one interrupts him, but I can see it's difficult for him to continue. "He wasn't in his right state of mind when he started the ritual. You may have noticed the pentagram on the ground and the burnt-out candles. The set up of the room and ritual he performed helped me hear his call."
So that was the design on the floor. I should've known. Also, now it's clear that it was Lucifer that was in the room with my dad that day. Those were the red eyes I saw.
"What I'm not sure if you saw by the time you arrived was the loaded shotgun he had in the room. If the ritual failed or his request was denied, he was planning a suicide." Lucifer seemed saddened in sharing this news.
I didn't realize my dad was struggling that much. I knew he had a bit of a drinking problem, but he was going to meetings, and I checked in on him as often as I could. I didn't even know he had a firearm!
"Then he heard the front door open. He heard you asking for him." Lucifer continues.
"And he decided against his suicide plan?" I ask, hoping that my dad would take my feelings into account.
"Well, you became a liability." Lucifer leans forward, his elbows resting on his legs as he holds his head in his folded hands. "He didn't plan on taking back what he told me, he enhanced his threat." Lucifer looks down for a second before looking me straight in the eye. "He threatened that if I don't take his deal, he'd not only kill himself, but he'd kill you first. A murder suicide."
I think Lucifer is giving me a minute to take everything in. "So... if you didn't give in to my dad's demands... he would've killed me?" I ask slowly.
"That wasn't a risk I was willing to take. I'm a father, too, you see." Lucifer sits back up. "I know with free will, humans do great things and horrible things, but this wasn't one I wanted to be a front row seat to." I guess that makes sense. For being one of the most hated figures in human history, Lucifer seems very thoughtful and kind.
"So... the better option was to send me here?" I question.
"I figured if I sent you here, you'd at least still be alive, I hoped." Lucifer mutters the last part. "It would give me more time to figure out a better option. If not, you would've been dead yesterday." He clarifies.
"I didn't even know sending humans here alive was an option." Charlie chimes in.
"It's not something I take lightly. I was in a bind. Plus, it's never a guarantee they'll still be alive for long once they're here." Lucifer explains.
"This... is a lot to understand." I say slowly, not making eye contact with anyone.
"I bet. You see, usually I charge a sacrificial lamb. Your dad offered you as the sacrifice for his deal instead of killing you. Seemed like the better of the two options." Lucifer uncomfortably laughs, as if trying to make the situation better.
I don't really feel like laughing right now, but that's an interesting concept. So, there was an actual deal between my dad and Lucifer. I look back up at Lucifer. "So, what did my dad trade me for?" Lucifer's eyes grew wide. Why?
"He probably wanted to see my mom again?" I ask Lucifer.
"Noooooot exactly." Lucifer is pulling on the collar of his jacket. He seems nervous again.
"Then what was it? I have a right to know!" I argue. I'm not sure if I actually do, but it would be nice to know.
"He..." Lucifer is really struggling to get this out. "He... wanted to see Hank again." Lucifer says quietly.
I was quiet for a little while until, "My dad... gave me away to the head honcho of Hell... to pet his damn dog again?!" I don't remember the last time I've felt this angry.
"Was it at least a cool dog?" Angel interrupts.
"Fuck, no!" Yeah, I'm angry. "He was an average dog that did average things that unfortunately died earlier than we expected! I got him for my dad to help him with his depression!" I stood up, pacing back and forth. "I mean, the dog was fine. I'm not mad at the dog." I don't know why I feel like I need to clarify that. "But... fuck! Seriously?!" I throw my fisted hands towards the ground.
As I do, light shoots from both of my hands and hits the carpet. Once the light dissipates there are two holes in the floor.
"Whoa." Vaggie says quietly.
"Shit. Sorry." Maybe that happened because I'm so angry. I have to learn to control this new power I received from Alastor. The group seems surprised as they realize I have power here, but no one verbalizes any questions.
"We'll figure something out, I'm sure of it." Charlie chimes in after a little silence. I don't know when she stood up, but she's standing next to me, hand on my shoulder with a smile.
"Thanks." I say quietly. I want to believe her, it's just hard to know that my dad valued me so little that he traded me away, for eternity, for his dog.
"Well, until then, maybe she deserves a night out." Surprisingly Husk recommends it. Everyone is looking at him at this point. I can't tell from this distance for sure, but I think Alastor's eye is twitching. "She's proven she has some sort of power to defend herself, plus I'm sure some of us wouldn't mind going with, right?" Husk has a small smile as a few others seem excited about the idea. "I think you deserve a break after getting this news, girlie." Husk seems to be waiting for an answer.
I think about it for a little bit and shrug. "Yeah, fuck it. Why not?"
