After finally finding something to eat that wasn't a pile of nuts and the pep talk from Husk, I feel reenergized to figuring out what my next steps are. Sitting out on one of the balconies of the hotel sure gives an interesting view of this place. Charlie explained to me once that the city is a pentagram with different districts and that overlords generally own or oversee specific areas of the pentagram. I can see many areas I don't recognize as well as the V's tower. I shudder just thinking of that place.
I look back at my piece of paper. I have one line drawn in the middle. The words Pros and Cons are written at the top. "Pros for staying in Hell. Never thought I'd say that out loud." I mutter as I begin writing. "I'm strong here. I have power to protect myself." I tap the pen a bit, thinking of thing two. "I've made friends here. Three, I have a place to stay. Four, I could perform here for an audience that would actually listen and enjoy. Five..." Do I put it? What the Hell! It's my list! "Sex with Alastor was the best sex I've had ever." Okay, that's enough Pros. Let's move to Cons!
"I don't belong here." Right? Though who knows, at this point maybe I do.
I feel a strange wind near me on the balcony that wasn't there just a second ago. I look to my side, and it looks like an opening or portal of some kind. I'd estimate it's maybe a six-foot circle. Big enough for me to fit through.
It's definitely big enough for the two girls who emerged from the portal. I've never seen them before, should I be concerned?
One looks small and even though she looks bewildered by her surroundings she still has this air of positivity about her. Plus, how many wings does this girl have?!
The other doesn't have as friendly of a face, maybe she's salty because she has one arm? That's a horrible assumption! I shouldn't assume that.
"Can I help you?" I ask the two.
The small girl gasps. "It's you!" She's so excited. She runs right up to me. I instinctively stand up and start backing away, but she holds both of my hands in hers. "We've been looking for you for days! We... may have misplaced you. I'm so sorry!" She seems genuinely sorry.
"I'm sorry? I'm not sure I follow." I've never been so confused.
"Oh right!" The small girl laughs a little, stepping back from me and letting go of my hands. "I'm Emily, a seraphim. Though you can call me Em. Emmie. E. Whatever you want. I go by whatever!" She's so bubbly! Also, a seraphim?! Here?!
"Emily, we must be quick. The Hell spawn will notice us any minute." The other woman mentions, looking around. She seems much more defensive.
"Oh, and that's Lute!" Emily points to the other lady. "We're here to bring you home!" She smiles.
"Back to earth?" I ask.
"Um... well, no." Emily's demeanor is slightly different. She's not sad, but empathetic maybe. "You see, we expected your arrival days ago. The day you saw your father when you were done with work. But you never showed up." She explains.
"Let me make sure I understand this straight." I wave my hands to slow her down. This doesn't seem to make Lute happy. "You're both from Heaven I'm assuming?" The two of them nod. "I was supposed to go to Heaven that day? My dad was supposed to kill me that day?" I question.
"I'm sure you have many questions, but now and here is not the time." Lute challenges. She walks closer to me and grabs my arm, walking me closer to the portal. "We'll explain everything once we're back." Her grip is pretty strong. I try pulling against her but damn she's determined!
"Whoa! Hold on just a second!" I argue, trying not to get pulled through the portal that Lute seems insistent on will lead to safety.
"It's okay (y/n)! We just want to get you back where you belong." Emily explains as she flies through the portal and waits for Lute and me on the other side. I can clearly see and hear her even though I haven't crossed.
"Okay but I have so many questions first!" I try to argue again, but Lute isn't having it. Lute walks through the portal just fine, but as soon as we reach the point where my arm hits the portal it feels like I hit an invisible wall.
Lute jerks back a bit, taken by surprise at the hold up. She's still holding onto my wrist. She looks at me, then at my wrist, and then at me again. She tries pulling me through the portal again.
"Ow ow ow just stop!" I yell at Lute. I don't want her to break my wrist! She lets go and she's easily through and on the other side. Both her and Emily look very confused.
"I don't understand." Emily says quietly, though loud enough that I can hear her.
"I'm guessing that I should be able to go through this?" I ask them as I hold my hand back up to the portal, only to be met by an invisible wall again. I hit against it with my fist a few times only to be blocked.
"Well, yeah." Emily explains. She walks up closer to the portal and puts her arm back and forth through it. "Why can't you go through?" It sounds like she's asking herself. "You belong here." She sounds sad.
"Maybe she did." Lute explains as she looks around, thinking. "Something has changed from the time she was supposed to die and now."
"A few things." I mumble. I'm not sure if they caught it though.
"Quite a few things indeed." I hear his voice behind me before I feel his presence. I don't even have to turn around to know how close he's standing. Seriously, is he just everywhere?! Traveling in shadows has to be the most convenient thing ever. "If she were in Heaven with you, she would be weak and powerless under your rule. Isn't that right?" Alastor questions the two of them.
Emily looks terrified and Lute looks pissed. Interestingly enough, the two of them stayed in the safety of their side of the open portal. I'm guessing if I can't go through, Alastor probably can't either? Are they afraid of Alastor? Neither of them answers his question.
"She's exactly where she needs to be. Where she belongs." Alastor puts his hands on my shoulders. Not tight, he seems relaxed. "Humans have free will, yes? She's chosen to become strong. To depend on herself and not be under the foot of Heaven like you offer." I look up at Alastor a bit confused. He focuses his attention on me. "It was the right choice." He clarifies.
I feel like I literally have an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other. In every movie I've ever watched you're supposed to pick the angel, but it doesn't feel right. It feels like I'm supposed to stay with the demon, my demon. Are the lines between Heaven and Hell truly this gray?
"We'll get this figured out (y/n)." Emily interrupts my thought process. "I'll figure something out." She clarifies. She seems so determined as she glares at Alastor.
"Emily, you seem great. I appreciate what you're trying to do." I explain. This earns me a tighter grip from Alastor. He must be concerned about where I'm going with this. "But I think you're misunderstanding the situation." I look back and forth from her to Lute. "I think I actually do belong here."
