Chapter 22 : Lara is poison.

The atmosphere at school was tense as Jesse approached Lara, his heart heavy with the impending conversation. He needed to be honest with her, to break the news that he wanted to end their relationship. As he found her in the hallway, he took a deep breath, preparing for what was to come.

Jesse: Lara, we need to talk.

Lara: smiling What's there to talk about, Jesse? We're doing just fine, aren't we?

Jesse: Lara, we're not. I've been doing a lot of thinking, and I think it's best if we... if we end things.

Lara: feigning surprise What? You can't be serious. We're perfect together.

Jesse: We were, but things have changed. I can't ignore the fact that we want different things now.

Lara: leaning in Is this because of that Billie girl? Are you falling for her?

Jesse: It's not about Billie. It's about us, Lara. I need to be honest with myself and with you.

Lara: mockingly You're breaking up with me? Do you really think you can do better?

Jesse: It's not about doing better, Lara. It's about realizing that we're not right for each other anymore.

Lara: playing the victim You're just like everyone else, Jesse. Using me and then throwing me away.

Jesse: This is not about using anyone. It's about being fair to both of us.

Lara: teary-eyed I thought you loved me, Jesse. How could you do this to me?

Jesse: I do care about you, Lara. But I can't pretend that our relationship is working when it's not.

Lara: grabs his arm You can't leave me, Jesse. I won't let you.

Jesse: Lara, you can't force someone to stay in a relationship. It's not healthy for either of us.

Lara: turning the tables You're just going to break my heart and move on to someone else, aren't you?

Jesse: I'm not looking to hurt you, Lara. I just want both of us to find happiness.

Lara: desperation in her eyes I'll change, Jesse. I can be whoever you want me to be.

Jesse: It's not about changing, Lara. We're different people now. And there's someone else I've realized I have feelings for.

Lara: anger rising Who is it? Tell me!

Jesse: It's Billie. I love her, and I can't deny my feelings any longer.

Lara: furious So, you're leaving me for that girl? She can't possibly love you the way I do.

Jesse: It's not a competition, Lara. I need to be true to myself, and right now, that means being honest about my feelings for Billie.

Lara's manipulative tactics intensified, but Jesse stood firm in his decision. As he walked away, he couldn't shake the feeling of guilt and empathy for Lara, but he knew that ending the relationship was the right choice for both of them.
