Once the water is cold, and we’ve emptied and refilled the water enough times to where there is no hot water left, we all stand and use the small towels hanging on the rod to dry our bodies. The moment my skin hits the fresh air, goosebumps pop along my skin.
Jeonghan sits down on the edge of the mattress, his shoulders slumping over slightly. “I’m never going to see my mom again.”
I walk up to him, grabbing his chin and tilting it toward me. “Yes, you will. Once shit is settled down, you will. It might be a month, it might be a year. We’ll never know. But, we have to keep moving. If you want to see your mom again, we have to.”
He stares at me, his eyes glossy with tears before he gives me a simple nod.
I nod back at him. “I’m going to meet the guy, grab a rental car, and I’ll come back to get you guys.”
Jeonghan shoots to a stand, his eyes widening in concern. “You’re leaving? Can I go with you?”
I shake my head, grabbing onto his shoulders, and give him a squeeze. My eyes go over his shoulder to Soonyoung, and he gives me a nod as he walks up to him, wrapping his arm around his waist. “No, Jeonghan. You can’t. You stand out like a fucking Christmas light.”
He frowns at me, his lips pinching in irritation. “What the hell does that mean?”
I roll my eyes as I back up toward the door. “It means the world is looking for you, and you’re too pretty not to be noticed.”
A pink hue covers his cheeks as Soonyoung pulls him toward the bed. He shoves him down, laying his head back on the pillow. He pulls his legs up, laying them over his lap as he grabs onto his bare feet.
I ignore the possessive side of me that wants to rip his hands from his wrists. “I’ll be back.”
“We’ll be here,” Soonyoung grumbles, tightening his grip on Jeonghan’s feet when he attempts to yank them away.
Spinning on my feet, I walk out of the small motel room, out into the blistering cold.
Our new home.
I keep my head tilted toward the ground as I slip out of the cab, slipping the driver some money before making my way to the apartment building.
Last stop.
I was able to find a phone and called one of the family business associates. There is always a plan in place for the Choi, and all I needed to do was say the word, and everything falls into place.
New identity, check.
New ID, check.
New bank account, check.
I’m waiting for Jeonghan’s new name to be processed, a new ID to be made, and then we’ll be free.
Coups and Jade Lee.
Married.
As it fucking should be.
After I stopped at the back alleyway to get my new ID and information from the weirdo who processes all the illegal shit, I hopped back in the cab to meet with the landlord.
Right on time.
I pull open the cold metal door, the scent of air fresheners and polished leather reaches my senses. I walk in, instantly finding a middle-aged man in a suit standing near the crackling fireplace as he scrolls through his phone.
The sound of my wet shoes squeaking on the tile reaches my ears, and the landlord must notice, too, because he lifts his head, appraising me quickly as he shoves his phone into his pocket.
