“Is this a bad time?” I asked Liam over the phone.

“Not at all.” He replied. “I’m glad you called. I’m assuming it’s because you changed your mind about tonight?” In that moment I wished I was talking to him in person so I could read his face. It was frustrating because I hadn’t heard him speak enough to decipher the different tones in his voice.

“Um,” I said. “Yeah actually. What did you have in mind, exactly?” Ohmygodohmygod I’m going to die. Chill out. You don’t even know if it’s a date, relax.

“Well, I don’t know about you but I’m rather fond of movies.” He said. Movies were typically a date thing, right? I mean, I hadn’t actually been on many dates. Whenever a guy asked a made up an excuse so I could focus on more important things. Why was I calling him again? “We could see whatever you like.” I heard Liam’s voice and snapped back to reality. Oh, right. That’s why.

“I…would love to. Yeah okay.” I managed to choke out. I hoped I didn’t sound nervous.

“Alright then. May I get your address or-”

“You can just pick me up at the café.” I said quickly. I mean he knew my name, had my number and knew where I worked, did he need my address too? Besides the café basically IS my address. I suck at these things. “I’ll pick you up at seven.” He said.

“Okay, I’ll see you then.” I said.

“Sounds lovely.” He said. “Bye.”

“Wait!” I heard myself saying. I could just hear Amarie’s moans now. No, Amy, don’t do it. Just don’t. “Yes?” he said, waiting for me to say something.

I stammered. “I-this…isn’t a date, is it?” I asked. That was probably the stupidest question he had ever heard. (A/N: This is supposed to be ironic since he gets asked stupid questions all the time by everyone) I heard him chuckle over the phone. Oh yeah, definitely the stupidest question.

“It doesn’t have to be if you don’t want it to be.” He said. For some reason those words calmed me, gave me a sense of ease. “But,” he said. “I would like it to be. But whatever you want.”

I smiled and I was now grateful this was over the phone so he couldn’t see me blushing. “Okay.” I said. “It’s not a date.” There was a pause. I wondered if he could tell I was kidding. I heard him laugh. “Okay.” He said. “I’ll see you later, Amy.”

I looked in the mirror one last time. I wasn’t wearing anything too special. A ruffled purple top, skinny jeans and black wedges. It wasn’t exactly the full-on-Diana but it was definitely more than I usually did. My hair was curled as per usual and my makeup wasn’t smeared for once. How did he feel the need to ask me out?

“You need more lip gloss.” Amarie said. She was sitting on the couch behind me. I gave her an oh please look through our reflections in the mirror. “How about no.” I said.

“Fine, whatever. Don’t listen to me.” She said rolling her eyes. “But when he tries to kiss you tonight you’re going to regret it.” I ran my hand through my curls and muttered “Yeah, right. I wish.” I checked my purse and made sure I had money before going downstairs. It was six fifty so I had time for a quick cup of coffee. The café was empty because I had closed it early. Jonathan was fine with it… Well I assumed he was. He didn’t actually know but I had closed early before and he never seemed to mind.

Just relax. I thought to myself. Don’t stress out, just have fun. I took a sip and the bitter sweet, warm liquid ran down my throat into my stomach. I was relaxed for a grand total of five seconds when the bell chimed and Liam walked in. I checked my watch. 7:00 on the dot. Very prompt.
