Hope and Dream

Steve just sat in the little plastic chair, the air cold around him. Normally, he didn't mind hospitals. He was used to being in them when he was little, his mom being a nurse. And then when he became a police officer he was often in the emergency room for different cases: domestic violence, drug addicts, drunk and disorderly conduct. His favorite crime had been coming in on Super Bowl Sunday just because someone lost a bet and had to shave his whole head, and boy was the man still in a great mood for having the razor slip.

But now?

The hospital was cold. It was dull. Just people moaning because they were sick. Doctors and nurses just running around going from one room to the other. He didn't even register that everyone was in the waiting room with him. He just kept his eyes on the doors.

"She'll be fine, Cap."

Steve didn't say anything. He just stayed welded to his seat. He wasn't going anywhere. "Where is she?" The doors came flying open and they all turned to see May rushing over to them. Right, nurse. "Where's Dublin?" She was frantic, looking at every person in the room.

Steve couldn't say a word. Tony took a deep breath and stood up, grasping May's shoulders. "What have they told you?" May shook her head. "Not much. Ah, just that she was brought in. She was unconscious, lost a lot of blood." Steve was flinching at every word. "They said, they said she was beaten? I don't-Peter called in a panic-he's on his way and-"

"Okay, breathe."

"They won't let me work on her because she's family and you can't work on family members, but Nat's in there and she's family, and-"

"Get your hands off me!" They all looked to see Nat being forcibly pushed out of the room. "I need to be in there!"

"You can't work on family." Nat glared at the man. "Everyone in that room is her family!" She looked in the window and her shoulders dropped. "Look, just-"

"We know." Nat gave a huff and turned towards the group. "They said I'm not in the right mind space to do anything." May nodded and wrapped Nat in a hug. "Thank you for trying." Releasing her, May composed herself and looked at everyone.

"Tell me what happened."

Bucky took a deep breath and rubbed his hand through his hair. "May..." She turned to him with a glare. "Was this because of you?" He just looked at her. "Am I losing my niece because of your super secret past?"

"Listen-"

"No. Now I have looked past it. I never questioned it because she was so happy at the time. Now tell me what the fuck happened." It took a lot for May to even utter a swear word just by the first letter. She was usually so prim and proper. A big attitude and everyone knew not mess with the woman. To actually get her to swear? "May!"

Peter ran in, followed by the brothers. "The whole damn city's invited." Tony rolled his eyes and glared at T'Challa. "Security breach so I blame you."

A Doctor came out, an iPad in his hands. "May?" Everyone spun around and stared at the Doctor. But Steve wouldn't take his eyes off the doors. "How is she?"

"She lost a lot of blood and has multiple broken bones. She has internal bleeding that we have to get under control. We need to get a CT to see the extent of her injuries. We still don't know what she was injected with. And unfortunately we couldn't save the baby..."

Steve's head shot up. "What?" Had he heard that right? "What did you just say?" Everyone's jaws dropped.

"The baby. There was just too much damage done and with the extent of her injuries..."

"She was pregnant?" Steve couldn't believe it. "How far along?"

"Not long. Maybe 7 weeks or so?" Steve did the math quickly in his head. Lila's birthday. "You didn't know?" Steve just shook his head, now mourning the loss of a child.
