The next day Paige and I got up and got ready for school. While my dad had placed her things in a room for her, she opted to sleep in my room with me and I was okay with that. We only had a few months of school left and then we were done. That was unless our new mates decided that we no longer had to go to school. That may seem fine to most but I wanted to graduate. However, I knew that there was nothing I could do against the Alpha. Mate or not he was still the Alpha of the pack and his word was final. I just hoped that he would see reason and let us finish school.
Paige and I took the ten-minute walk to school in relative silence. Normally we would find something to talk about but today was different. That was because of the two wolves that had been trailing us the moment we stepped out of my house. They kept a bit of a distance but were close enough that it was obvious that they were following us and not just walking along.
As we approached the school the stares we were getting became unbearable. It wasn't just because of who we were mated to, but also because of who was trailing us. The Gamma couple, Alec and Valerie. They were 28 years old, mated since their first Full Moon Ball, and the packs Gammas and now they were practically stalking me and Paige. Our lockers were side by side and we collected our books for our first class. Paige slammed her locker closed and then slumped against the door.
"Is this our new reality? Being followed around by the Gamma couple every day?"
"Man, I really hope not." I turned to look at the couple standing a few feet away. Not inconspicuous at all.
"Once upon a time I might have wished for all the attention to be on me, but now I wish I was just invisible," Paige mumbled.
"As long as we are mated to higher-ups, we are never going to be invisible again." I slammed my locker shut and took Paige's hand. We walked through the halls, students parting to let us through as we headed to our first class before the bell rang. I was always thankful that Paige and I shared all of our classes, now more than ever. We reached the door and I spun around still holding Paige's hand.
"Absolutely not." They both bowed to me before raising their heads. "I don't know why you're following us, but you are not coming into our classes with us."
"Apologies, Luna," Gamma Alec said as he gave a short bow. "It is our duty to guard and protect you."
"And we have been tasked to ensure that our new Beta female doesn't disappear," Gamma Valerie said pointedly to Paige.
"She's not going to run and you are not coming in here. Stay," I stated firmly. I tugged Paige's hand and pulled her into the classroom. My eyes rolled when our English teacher Mrs. Zev bowed lightly as we passed her desk.
I pulled Paige to our seats near the back of the room.
"I'm not going to let anything happen to you," I whispered when we sat down.
"I know you're the Luna now, but your girl's a lost cause," a voice said behind us.
"Shut up Candace," I said over my shoulder.
You know when people write books and movies and they always feature a stereotypical white girl? Long straight perfect blonde hair, blue eyes, a thin figure, and designer clothes topped off with a bitchey attitude? That was Candace Meyers. She wasn't 18 yet and everyone knew that she had been hoping that the Alpha would claim her at her first Full Moon ball. She had been telling people since she was 14 that the Alpha was just waiting for her to become of age, that's why he hasn't claimed anyone. Her little followers believed her because her father was a top warrior and because of that she got to spend time at the packhouse. I'm sure it just ate her up inside to know that I had been the one claimed and not her.
