Starting Over

Blaze woke up the next morning to the sound of her head-aching alarm. She reached to the stand and hit the snooze button on her phone. But it didn't make her feel any better. Rolling over, Blaze noted the slight sound of ticking coming from a clock on the wall. Ugh... This is an amazing start.

She sat up in her bed and picked up her phone. The photo of her and Silver remained on her lock screen. He was smiling and sticking out his tongue while she kissed him on his cheek. Her heart barely clenched and she put her phone back on the stand before leaving the room. Amy and Rouge were already awake with breakfast cooking on the stove. "Morning hun. You doing okay?" Rouge greeted. Blaze shrugged her shoulders. "Could be worse right?" Amy sighed. "We're not judging you. I hope you know that we're here for you. But just to take your mind off of it for a little bit, we made you pancakes!"

Amy giggled as she presented Blaze with chocolate chip pancakes that weren't in circles. Blaze smiled, using the fork to take a bite. "Mm! Oh my gosh... That... is amazing! Ah, just what I needed!" she told them, putting more bits in her mouth. "I'm glad you went to culinary school." she added, wiping her mouth. "And here they were mad because I couldn't get them in perfect circles! But I'm glad you're feeling better. What do you want to do today? We could totally go on a revenge shopping spree! Or- we can go get you a makeover! What about-"

"Calm down hun! Blaze barely just got up! And this is probably still a fresh wound! C'mon!" Rouge scolded. "Oh right... Sorry..." Amy sighed. "No no! Seriously. You two are doing a lot as it is. Trust me, I do appreciate it... But I need to go to work."

Both gasped dramatically before getting closer to her side. "Are you crazy?! You get a free day! Not to mention you have a lot to figure out right now. Blaze sweetie, please don't!" Rouge pleaded. "Relax! I'm not going in for patrol shifts. I'm going... To transfer units so I can be in a new area." she told them. "What? Are you sure? Which one would you even go to? Aren't most of the divisions pretty full?" Amy questioned. "G.U.N isn't the only hero corp in Mobius. Knuckles has been telling me they've been looking for anyone interested. If I apply for the same position, I'll still be there during the day. Hopefully, I'll be able to avoid him too..." she explained. "Listen, whatever you want to do, we'll fully support you."

Blaze nodded her head, allowing the two girls to hug her tightly. "Thanks. I don't know what I'd do without you..."

...

At about one o'clock, Blaze finally arrived at the agency. She walked to the head office where he was sorting through files. She knocked on the edge of the open door making him look up. "Ah, Ms. Blaze. I didn't expect you today. Still, your presence is reassuring. Please, come in." Blaze nodded, walking inside the room. Slowly, a file was slid in front of her boss. He looked confused but picked it up anyway. After reading through the papers, he looked up at her concerned. "Wow... This was... unexpected. Is there a reason for the sudden transfer request? You have reached a respectable position here at our unit."

"I understand that. However, a few incidents have come up recently, and a new unit would do me a lot of favors. I want to stay, trust me I do. But... I'm not sure it'd be in the best interest of what you're looking for here. Thank you though. I appreciate everything that's been offered to me while I was here."

Her boss nodded. "I understand. Whatever it may be, I hope you can find whatever you're looking for. I will start signing you off for your new unit to make sure they have all the information you need to move forward. We will miss you." he replied, genuinely upset that she was leaving. Blaze bowed her head slightly before turning towards the door. She took a deep breath as soon as she exited the office. "Right... Let's get the rest of my belongings," she told herself as she walked towards her private office where the documents were. When she walked in front of the desk, the framed photo of Silver's proposal sat there. She picked it up, gazing over it.

Tracing the picture with her thumb, Blaze felt tears weld up in her eyes even more. Too many events had happened in two nights and each minute it felt more real. She threw the picture in the trash before grabbing the remaining decorations and items on the desk. Throwing them in boxes, she wiped her eyes before heading back out. She tried to hurry to make sure that nobody noticed that she was leaving.

Blaze approached the elevator in a hurry, knowing that her anxiety was getting worse. When the doors opened she entered, clicking a button. A hand prevented it from closing as a familiar coworker entered the elevator. Blaze glanced over at the hero Shadow. He crossed his arms, at first ignoring his partner in the small space. But when he noticed the boxes, he was curious what was going on. "Is there something that I should know?" Blaze was surprised by his question. They were good coworkers, but never talked on a personal level. Nor were they really good friends. "I suppose you deserve to know..." she sighed.

Shadow glanced at her with an eyebrow raised. "I'm... I'm moving departments... Permanently." she told him. Surprised, he gasped. The elevator opened up and Blaze began to walk out. "Wait! That's it? What's the big deal?! Silver told me how hard you've been working just to get to some of the best positions here, what gives?!" he ranted, keeping up with her as she began to head out. "I need space, Shadow. This isn't working for me anymore." she insisted, trying to deflect any suspicion. "Bull! Look, I understand we don't talk like we should. But you're in my field! I deserve to know! Don't you realize how the others are gonna be mad that you're leaving without a notice?"

He stepped in front of her to stop her path. Blaze huffed knowing he wasn't going to leave her alone. "It's none of your business... Please... I just want to go home..." she pleaded with him. Shadow heard the pain in her voice. "Hey... Are you okay?" he asked, softer this time. Blaze couldn't form words and was becoming more frustrated. "I have to go!" she snapped, pushing him aside so she could leave. Shadow stood there confused about how urgent Blaze was to get out of the building.

Scratching his head, he decided to head back upstairs to their offices. He searched for clues that she might've left behind. Checking the trashcan, he saw the picture of Silver and Blaze's engagement in the trash. "What the hell...?" he questioned. He took a picture of it in the trash, sending it to Rouge and Knuckles. He texted, Tell me why I found this in the trash after hearing Blaze is transferring.

He waited a couple of minutes for a reply. Meanwhile, he took the trash out for Blaze so nobody else found it and tried to release false claims. Shadow went to a random trash dump near the building, disposing of the photo to be sure nobody found it the way it was. A ping went off on his phone. Both Knuckles and Rouge had responded.

Knuckles: Harsh! Think they had some nasty breakup lol?

Rouge: Knuckles.

Knuckles: What?! It's a genuine-
Oh...
Wait actually!? WHY?

Shadow: Wth? Is that why she's transferring?

Rouge: Yes... Listen it's a whole thing but I really shouldn't be texting about it! And it's Blaze's business. So don't you two dare say anything to anyone!

Knuckles: My lips are sealed babe.

Shadow: I knew something was up. I disposed of the evidence. Hopefully, she's okay.

...

Now staring at her stuff, Blaze couldn't help but sense some sort of relief. The hard part was finally over and now without anyone in her way, she could move on. A knock alerted her and Rouge opened the door slowly. She stood there, a soft smile on her face. "How are you feeling hun?" she asked. Blaze shrugged. "I guess better than most people who've been through a pretty dramatic breakup." Rouge chucked, joining her side. "I'm proud of you hun. I wanted you to hear that." she told her. Blaze smiled, reaching over and the two shared a hug.

"You've got this. I'm here for you okay? Whatever you need, Amy and I will do our best to provide. I don't want you to feel alone because we all love you dearly." Rouge told her, pushing a piece of hair out of her eyes. "I know... I'm sorry I've suddenly put all of this on you but... I'm grateful that you're here." Blaze replied. "Oh hun, it could've happened at 3 a.m. and I still would've come to pick you up off a street corner! We're in this together."

The two held hands before going back into another hug. Blaze admits she was scared, but she wasn't going to let this ruin her outlook on life. "You're right, I've got this."
