To understand the present, we need to know what happened in the past.

The Past:

Izuku had woken up to the smell of antiseptic soap and the sound of a monitor softly beeping. His mouth felt dry and his body hurt all over. He blinked a few times to clear his vision wondering where the hell he is. As soon as his eyes were able to focus, he looked around knowing right away that he is in a hospital. Musutafu General to be exact. He's been here enough times to recognize it immediately.

"I'm so happy to see you awake, Hero Deku!" a nurse smiled warmly at him. "I'll go get the doctor right away."

She left quickly, her white crocs squeaking on the polished floor. Izuku sighed, he tried to remember what had happened to land him back in the hospital. His memory is a bit fuzzy, but he remembers being hit by a quirk and Kacchan screaming his name. "Kacchan!" he croaks, his voice unable to call out for his alpha. Izuku tries to calm down, but his anxiety over not knowing about his mate is making him panic. "Kacchan!" he tries again, but his vocal cords seem to be damaged.

"Mr. Bakugo" a man wearing a white lab coat hurries in, worry on his face as the heart monitor starts beeping rapidly.

"Kacchan? Where is Kacchan?"

"Kacchan?" the doctor asks. "Who's that?"

"Bakugo. Bakugo Katsuki" he manages to huff out. "Where is he? Is he ok?"

"Oh" the doctor smiles warmly at him "Hero Dynamite is fine. He took a few punches and scrapes, but nothing a few good days of rest won't cure."

Izuku sighed, relaxing back into the bed. Kacchan will be fine. "Hero Dynamite was here not too long ago. He said he'll be right back, he needed to get something to eat at the restaurant across the street because, and I quote "This hospital's food tastes like shit."

Izuku chuckled because that is something that Kacchan for sure would say. "He's not wrong, it does." Izuku continues to smile, but stops when the doctor's grin starts to looks forced. Izuku knows that smile, it's the smile of someone who needs to break bad news, but is afraid to. "Doctor, whatever you need to tell me, just get it over with. Your face is giving you feelings away."

The doctor tilted his chin up professionally, placing Izuku's chart at his side. "I would tell you, but your alpha asked that he be allowed to talk to you first. You are my patient and if you would rather hear the news from me, then I will share the information, but I will let you decide."

Izuku's anxiety spiked yet again. If Kacchan wanted to be the one to tell him then it must be bad. What could it be? Yes, his body is hurting, but it's nothing he hasn't felt before. There is a change, a hollow feeling that hasn't been there before, but it could just be the pain killers that are dulling his senses. "I can wait for Kacchan."

"Ok, but I'm here if you need me for anything." The doctor turned around, but not before flashing a look of deep sadness.

"Why? Am I dying?!" Izuku's mind in turmoil. "Why isn't Kacchan here?! Why is he sitting across the street instead of being by my side?"

"Hey, Nerd" Katsuki walked into his room holding a slice of Izuku's favorite strawberry cake. He doesn't eat it very often, only on days when he's either celebrating or the opposite, when something bad happened. Judging by the way the doctor had looked at him and the way his mate's body is stiff, he can only deduce that it's the later. Kacchan has bad news.

"Kacchan, did someone get hurt? Were civilians hurt?! Why are you standing there instead of sitting beside me?"

"You lost One For All," Katsuki said, hating himself for being so blunt. He'd rather rip the Band-Aid off quickly otherwise he'd break down. "You got hit by a quirk nullifying laser. Nobody has any idea if it's permanent, but the research Gang Orca discovered says that every test subject this laser has been tested on, their quirks have not returned even after 5 years. I'm sorry, Izuku. I've been told that you need to prepare yourself to live as a Quirkless omega."
