❝ I WANT JACK TO BE MAYA'S DAD ❞

Riley excitedly watched her best friend open the lid of the box that contained her present. She beamed at the blonde as another box was revealed underneath the first one. "Happy fourteen, Maya! How's fourteen? Tell me what it's like to be fourteen but don't leave anything out."

"So far, it's been a lot of work," Maya complained as she unveiled yet another, slightly smaller box.

She ignored her best friend's grumbling and continued as if she hadn't been interrupted: "because you know I'll be there soon and I want to know what I have to look forward to."

Maya took on an unaffected air. "Well, if you're like me, you can look forward to your mother forgetting your birthday."

"Oh, no she did not!" Riley exclaimed, whipping around to crawl out the window.

But the other girl had anticipated this and grabbed on to the back of her pants before she could get very far. "Where you goin', honey?"

Still holding her kneeling position, Riley gritted out: "must talk to your mom."

"Must not get involved," Maya replied in the same tone, using her grip on the brunette to force her back into the seat.

The younger girl sighed. "Why do you tell me these things if you don't expect me to fix them?"

"When you're fourteen, you'll understand," Maya told her, taking on a lofty tone of faux-wisdom.

Riley was not so easily appeased. Still outraged, she demanded, "how could your mother forget your birthday, Maya?"

"I've stopped trying to figure it out," she said with a shrug. "She was already gone when I woke up this morning. She probably just took an early shift at the diner."

"Rather than be there for your birthday? Uh-uh."

Riley made to climb out of the window again, but Maya was quick to catch her once more. With one hand occupied by the belt loops of her friend's pants, she used the other to completely unwrap her present at last. Her expression softened as she smiled at the jewelry. "Riles, a friendship ring."

"Yeah." Riley tried to still sound annoyed but her enthusiasm about the gift dulled the edge.

"Two of them."

"Yeah!"

"In case I lose one."

The inaccuracy of the statement finally made Riley sit down. "No."

"Well, anybody else would have just gotten me one."

"No."

Maya's face brightened as the realization dawned on her. "Oh, I get it!"

Thinking that her best friend had figured it out, Riley smiled giddily at her. "Yeah."

"One for each hand."

The brunette slumped in disappointment. "No."

Maya had just been teasing her, of course, and as she put one of the rings on, she promised the other girl solemnly, "I'll never take this off until I die."
