Jonah's week in New York ended all too soon for Miya and it felt like in no time at all that he was back on the plane, this time heading to Scotland for his study abroad program. At least she didn't have to say goodbye to her mother, whose reason for her extended stay (besides the upcoming holidays) would soon be revealed.
Juliet, of course, already knew why she was there; Stuart had called her a few months ago to tell her that he and Jennifer wanted to run some neurological tests for Farkle. Despite their inability to agree on almost anything, there was one common denominator between them that would always bring them together: their son's wellbeing. They knew that Farkle was special— even beyond being just their son and a genius besides— and they wanted to give him all the support they could. So, they decided to find out what they could do to help him succeed.
Thanks to his wealthy parents, Stuart had learned early on that throwing money at a problem was the quickest, most surefire way to make it disappear. People were predictable. They liked money, they liked security, and if you could offer them either of those, it would smooth the path to achieving your goals. That's how Stuart had been able to have such a thriving career; he threw himself into his work and a couple million dollars never hurt anyone, either. But this?
In spite of their friends' running joke about him being some kind of android, Farkle was his human son, not some business conglomerate that he was trying to appease. Farkle had thoughts and feelings and whatever they did, whatever they said, would affect him for the rest of his life. It was one of the reasons why Stuart almost never saw him; he could stare a CEO in the eyes and tell them that their business was shit and would now be his (not in those exact words, obviously), but he was terrified of somehow messing up with his son and putting him on a path that was less than he deserved. If he never saw Farkle or talked to him, those odds decreased dramatically.
Yet, he couldn't also just sit by and do nothing, not when his son was in the same, rare grouping as Hawking, Edison and Curie, and that scared him even more. He didn't know what the results of the tests would be. Knowing his wife, Jennifer would probably use his money to jet off to France or even Australia if the news was too difficult to handle. He'd be alone to deal with something he didn't understand. And, as someone who easily understood practically everything, it made the little he didn't know even more daunting. So, he called in emotional support in the form of the person he was closest to: Juliet.
A few months ago
Juliet was only slightly surprised when she saw Stuart's name light up her phone screen but she didn't hesitate to answer the call. "Hey, stranger. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
There was a brief silence before Stuart exhaled. "'I need your help.'"
She sat up at the seriousness in his voice. "What's going on?"
"'It's about Farkle,'" Stuart explained, and immediately, her concern deepened. "'Jennifer and I, we want to run some tests. Neurological ones. We know he's a genius but we want to understand exactly what kind of genius he is. And. . . I need you there.'"
Juliet blinked. "For emotional support?" she teased him. "What, like a Schnauzer?"
She expected a scoff, maybe even a dry laugh. Instead, the man on the other side was quiet and when he finally spoke again, there was no humor in his voice. "'I'm serious, Juliet. I don't know what we're going to find out and I don't know how to handle it. Jennifer. . . she'll probably run. And I—'" He cut himself off, clearing his throat. "'I don't want to be alone for this.'"
