Benjie was mesmerised by the snow so much that he had stared out the car window all the way to the nursery he was starting that morning. The winter had set in and so had school. Noah had him enrolled at the same preparatory he had gone to. It was an old building with huge metal gates which had the school crest of a shield in four partitions making it look like an old prison but apparently it was one of the best schools in England and all the rich folks sent their kids there. When Noah had first mentioned it, Adeline was relunctant. The tuition fees was more than the cost of her house back in Ghana, no exaggerations intended. It had taken the combined effort of Noah, Carla and Max to get her to give in. Since it was his first day, Noah had offered to drive them though Adeline refused. She was worried someone might recognise him and blow it out of proportion but he brushed it off saying that they would definitely know.
"I mean look at him, he looks just like me and has my name." he had explained. "Besides I don't care if they know. I'm not ashamed of him." In order to avoid an argument, she let him be and now there they were dropping him off. They both entered the building where a lot of the kids were walking and talking since the bells hadn't gone off yet. A few grown ups wandering around looked at them with recognition, mostly for Noah, and shock. He was carrying Benjie oblivious to the attention he was drawing. Soon they got to the headmistress' office. They were ushered into her main office by her secretary who was openly admiring Noah. The headmistress was one no nonsense looking woman. She was slim and seemed to carry herself well. She stood up when they entered, shook hands with them then sat down after they seated.
"It's nice to see you in person, Mr. Hedlund." she said smiling which made her look less stern.
"Likewise, Mrs. Baker" Noah responded.
"And I believe this is Benjamin."
"Yes and this is his mother, Adeline."
"Oh, pleasure to meet you." she said turning to Adeline with a surprised look which disappeared quickly.
"You too." Adeline replied with a forced smile. She fell silent as Mrs.Baker and Noah spoke. Before long, they were heading to Benjie class. The hallway was cleared without a student in sight. Mrs. Baker led them into a brightly painted room with about 15 kids all dressed in the same uniform as Benjie's, a black blazer with the school's emblem, a white shirt underneath and a pair of black pants for the boys and skirts for the girls. A young blonde who Adeline assumed was the teacher came to them. Mrs. Baker spoke to her and she looked over slightly to them with that same surprised look. She then smiled and welcomed them. Noah handed Benjie to her and thankfully he didn't cry.
"I guess he's already tired of seeing us all day" Adeline joked.
"Maybe and you shouldn't worry. He'll fit right in." Lori, the blonde teacher assured and walked back to the other kids with him. There were two other women in there as well and had been watching the entire encounter with the same expression they had been getting that morning. After seeing how well Benjie settled they begun their journey back home.
"I'm pretty sure it'll be over the news tomorrow." Adeline commented on their way back.
"What?" Noah asked cluelessly
"Benjie. Did you see the looks on everyone's face in the school."
"Yeah, so what?"
"So what? Noah, this means we're no more a secret. All of England'll know about your illegitimate son and your mistress." she snapped.
"What the hell are you talking about? Benjie's not illegitimate."
"Not to you. You're married. How do you think the world would view this?"
"Why do you care when you know it's all lies."
"Ugh...you know what, forget it!"
"You don't get to do that. Tell me what your problem is?"
"My problem is how this is going to affect Benjie. People are going to see him as a bastard whose mum probably seduced you for money. They're gonna see Melanie as the victim and take it out on him."
"Where the hell did you get this idea from?" he asked looking incredulously at her wondering where she got that absurd idea from. She sighed and turned to look out the window.
She knew he wouldn't understand since he knew nothing of what had happened. Melanie had come to the house two days ago when she was alone with Benjie. Carla had gone out with her husband, Henry then. She had said some unpleasant things to her making her insecurities plummet to an all time high. She hadn't told anyone because in a way she felt it was true. She really berated herself for following Noah. It was a foolish decision propelled by that kiss. Soon they got home and before Noah could get a word out, she was already out the car and heading into the house. He waited until she was inside before driving to work with an idea in mind.
As usual Max stood at the entrance waiting and scurried after him as soon as he got out."How was the school?" he asked
"Ugh... how can you tell what a woman's problem is." Noah begun "I mean what makes her switch moods so easily. One time she's all smiley faces then the next, she's coming up with crazy ideas and getting mad at me for trying to assure her everything'll be fine. She says she doesn't want to argue but does exactly that. Ugh! Half the time I don't even know what she's thinking." Max just listened in disbelief already knowing who he was talking about. It just surprised him to hear Noah speak like that. In all the years he had worked with him, he had never heard him speak about a woman like that. More often than not, he had them easily figured out even his own wife. Smiling secretly, he made a mental note to congratulate Adeline for breaking Noah the invincible.
