Just a Friend

"Just a friend. Of course, I'm just a friend who else would I be? I had my chance with him and I blew it. Why wouldn't I be just a friend? I shouldn't even be a friend anymore, we broke up last year." Tommy knocked on the bathroom door a minute later. "You ok?" "Yeah, I just..." she trailed off as she wiped away her tears and fixed her makeup. "Damn it," she said, noticing her eyes were red from crying. "You sure you're ok?" "I'm fine," she said, walking out, hoping Tommy wouldn't notice her red eyes. "Emily left after you went to the bathroom." They started walking to the car. "Oh," Mia nodded, her voice breaking. "I know I asked this a couple of times, but are you sure you're ok?" "Mhmm," she said. 'No. Of course, I'm not ok. I've loved you from the moment I met you and you said I'm just a friend,' she thought. "Don't get mad at me, but I don't think you're ok, your eyes are really red." "I fell asleep at like, 2 in the morning, I'm probably just tired." 'Or just a friend,' she thought and rolled her eyes. "Did I do something wrong?" "What? No. Why?" "Because you're acting different." "How so?" "You're not as talkative as normal." "I'm tired, can you please just drop it," she said, getting irritated at the fact that he didn't know what he did. "Ok, now I know I did something wrong. We never argue. Was it something I did?" "More like something you said," she muttered under her breath. "Huh?" "More like something you said," she repeated, louder. Tommy started thinking, 'What did I say?' He couldn't figure it out and two hours later a few minutes before they got off work, he asked, "What did I say wrong?" "You really are oblivious." Mia rolled her eyes and walked out of the room. "I don't remember calling her oblivious," he said. A few minutes later, Mia walked back into the room. "We're off," she said and grabbed her purse and started walking out the door when Tommy called her. "Mia, wait." "What," she said, annoyed. "I don't remember ever calling you oblivious." "You never did. I was the one who was calling you oblivious since you genuinely don't remember what you said wrong," Mia turned and walked out the door. "What did I say," Tommy wondered aloud. When he got home, he was still thinking about everything he said that day, specifically around the time Mia rushed to the bathroom. He decided to call her and ask. She let her phone ring a few times before picking it up. "What," she said, still very mad. "I honestly don't know what I said wrong." "Well, you are just going to have to keep thinking about it until you figure it out. Think about the time you were talking to Emily at the café," she said and hung up. "What? I don't remember saying anything that would offend her. Maybe she's... No, that was last week I thought." He decided to call Emily to see if she heard anything that would offend Mia. "What do you want," she asked when she picked her phone up.
