"What do you mean gone?"
A growl cuts through the young wolf's words as he snaps, "I mean gone, not here. Taken away and probably killed. What part of this aren't you understanding?"
Theo shakes his head, forcing a deep breath in and out, a false sense of calm following it. Leave it to teenagers to test his self-control. He swallows back the biting retort, pointedly ignoring Alec's tone. Two pairs of eyes lock onto him, wary and waiting, uncertain of what the next move is. Since when do people look to him for decisions? The last time he was in charge of people, all but one ended up in the ground. A shudder runs through him, shaking him from his head.
Barely sparing a glance at his two friends, unable to handle the fear he knows is in their eyes, he spins on his heel. Without pausing, he starts towards the door, pace just shy of running. Liam is right on his tail, an ever-present shadow, never far behind and desperately missed. Some chipped part of his heart falls back into place as they step out the door in sync.
"Where are you?" He digs into his pocket, fishing for the truck's keys.
In the silence that follows, Liam's voice, rough and almost biting, does have him looking behind himself. He sighs when he sees the beta stopped, Anika frozen in the doorway, both of them nearly nose to nose.
"You," Liam points a finger at her, then to the house, tone riding on the edge of too sharp. "Stay here, help Argent if he needs it or do whatever it is that you do . This is pack business, you," he points at her again, voice dropping near to a growl, "are not needed."
Anika nods her head, clearly knowing better than to argue with a pissed off werewolf. He sighs, bringing his eyes back to forward. Hopefully, Anika understands this is not personal, not against her. When it comes to the safety of anyone in McCall pack, especially the puppies, tunnel-vision and hurricanes of emotion are imminent. Add in how high tensions were between her and Liam before the kid called...He is just happy cleaning up a bloodbath has yet to put on today's to do list.
Theo's fingers tighten around the phone in his hand, turning his focus back to the teen on the line, who still has yet to answer his question as he unlocks the truck.
"Alec," he says sternly, swinging up into the cab. Maybe a little too much so, if the gasp on the other end is anything to go by. Shaking his head, he repeats his question. "Where are you, kid?"
At the same time as Liam opens the passenger door, Alec's voice crackles through the receiver. "The library."
A matched pair of growls ripple through the vehicle. Of course it would be the fucking library of all places. Maybe they really should look into having the damn building cleansed or mystically scrubbed. Too much shit happens within those four walls for it to not be a coincidence.
"Stay there, okay? We're coming to you," Liam says loud enough to be heard over the phone, despite it being pressed into Theo's cheek.
Tires squeal, piercing through the engine's rumble, as Theo starts the truck and guns forward. Time is in short supply, and as much as he loves his battered home on wheels, the luxury of being gentle is not something they can afford. As rubber meets asphalt, Liam is calling someone on his own phone, panic flooding the car the longer it just rings.
Theo squints, eyes flicking between the blond and the road, "Who're yo-"
The line crackles to life. "What do-"
"Brett, just shut up and listen," Liam all but snarls, wasting no time before launching into an explanation of the day's events.
Question answered, Theo focuses on the road, his foot nearly flat on the floorboard. Deputies and speeding tickets are the least of his worries as he careens towards the clearly cursed high school.
