CHAPTER 10: A LIGHTWORK FALL

MAGNOLIA WAS confused, seeing Echidna stare at them as the elevator doors shut. "We're in a sanctuary. Athena would have had to let her in, but why would she do that?" Grover asked Annabeth who was looking down, trying to find a logical reason.

"Medusa's head," Magnolia replied nonchalantly, not bothering to make eye contact with a panicky Grover.

"Huh, M?" Grover asked.

"She embarrassed her mother. She went along with my dumb idea of sending Medusa's head to Olympus." Magnolia explained before she gave a sympathetic look towards Annabeth, knowing that this would be heartbreaking for her as all she wanted to do was please her mother.

"It wasn't dumb, M," Percy reassured, looking down at the tired girl resting her head on his shoulder.

"It was, Athena let Echidna in so I doubt she'll help us when we get to the top." Magnolia continued.

"Can't we just go back down another elevator?" Percy asked.

"Echidna's probably right behind us." Annabeth objected. "She'll meet us at the top," she finished.

The elevator bell dinged and the group arrived at a top platform full of people. Annabeth used her quick thinking and rang the fire alarm, sending all the people out and attempting to send the rest of the group out with them.

"You, Grover and Percy follow them down," Annabeth told them, gesturing for them to follow the people.

"We're not splitting up," Grover told her, Percy's left arm wrapped loosely around his neck.

"Grover, come on," Annabeth warned.

"No. We're all getting out of here together." Percy restated.

"We won't make it. The Chimera is the demigod killer." Annabeth explained, helping Grover and Magnolia get Percy to the exit. "Someone has to stay back to slow her down and buy everyone some time," she explained, stopping at the entrance, ready to shut the door on them. "Okay, help him down the stairs and get him to the river, and don't stop. Not till you get to Hades, not till you have the bolt, do you hear me?" she asked.

"Wait," Percy exclaimed, the familiar ringing of his sword became audible as he held it up to Annabeth. "Take this," he told her.

Once Annabeth had a grip on it, Percy span so he was in the memorial room, sword in hand and door shut in front of them.

Annabeth and Grover tried to stop him, banging on the door and yelling his name but they didn't get the response they hoped. "Poseidon's never helped me before. He wasn't gonna start now," was all he said before he walked away from the door.

Magnolia could only stand there, listening to her best friends trying to stop Percy from practically sacrificing himself. She could've been invisible if it wasn't for the fact she was breathing like she had been running a marathon. Cardio had never been a strong strength of hers anyway.
