CHAPTER 13: A DEAL WORTH DEATH

PERCY WALKED onto the small boat, holding his hand out to help Magnolia get on before they both sat down.

Soon after they had started the park ride, projections of  There was no noise apart from the flickering of the lights. Percy heard a thud and glanced over at Magnolia, his gaze lingering but shifting when he heard a song starting to play throughout the cave. Magnolia flinched at the sudden loud sound and Percy placed a hand on her shoulder to stop her from falling out. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"Yeah. The music was just a surprise, that's all." Magnolia replied.

Percy nodded in reply. "I feel like I've heard this before. I think, from an orthodontist's office maybe?" he wondered.

A projection flew along the sides of the cave, illuminating the two in a colourful glow. The projection showed the story of a little boy, seemingly obsessed with weapons until Percy explained it. "Wait, I know this. It's Hephaestus's story." he began, Magnolia watching along with the projection while Percy explained.

"Rejected by Hera, Rejected by Aphrodite. My mum told me these stories all the time. I remember this. She said..." Percy continued before he trailed off.

"What?" Magnolia asked, looking at him.

"She said this is what the gods are like to each other. This is the kind of family they are." Percy finished.

"Why did you pause?" Magnolia asked him, occasionally glancing back to the story as Percy spoke.

"Maybe Annabeth was right. Maybe my mother should have been preparing me better." Percy wondered.

"Maybe she was preparing you. So when you got to us, you'd be different than this." Magnolia told him, looking up at him reassuringly.

Percy never got to finish as the story stopped and the machinery seemingly powered down, the tunnel only being illuminated by crystals at the end.

The two started speeding down a steep track, both kids holding each other's hand while holding onto the boat, screaming as they rode down a crystal cave.

They slowed down as Magnolia tried to catch her breath, letting go of Percy's hand and holding her chest.

"There it is. Ares's shield." Percy pointed out.

Both kids saw the end of the ride up ahead and nearly froze on the boat. "Jump!" Percy yelled, standing up and jumping from the boat toward the shield.

"More swimming?" Magnolia asked, standing up and jumping in the water herself. She had never swam, not so willing to get her clothes wet so it was no surprise when she struggled to stay afloat.

She accidentally swallowed more water while trying to breathe, slowly sinking until she saw what seemed like a whirlpool just before she became unconscious.

The next thing Magnolia remembered was coughing up water as Percy tried to help her sit up.
