I tried to talk to everyone. Everyone! Yet nothing came out.
I almost told Mani but Jaz called her before I could speak.
Hell! I almost told Ryan when were out back smoking but rain started pouring down so we had to rush inside.
It was impossible. No matter how hard I tried, the words wouldn't come out.
The one person I really wanted to try and talk to was my brother but the fact that we aren't exactly on speaking terms kept me from doing so.
I'm never going to be able to ask for help...I should've just given my lighter to Miss Almos instead of making a promise I knew I wouldn't be able to keep.
Today was Friday. The day Dante and I were going to do our Spanish project.
When I asked my parents- well, correction. When I asked my dad about Dante coming over he agreed but only if we left the door open at all time and he left before nine pm. Oh, and of course as soon as he arrived he'd had to meet my dad. Of course...
Me and him were waiting for Dante to arrive in the living room when he spoke to me in unexpected words.
"Will you tell me what happened when you went to that party or shall I wait another month before asking again?"
I gulped. "Nothing happened."
"Is that why you ran upstairs as soon as you got home?" He paused to look away from the TV and instead meet my gaze. "You didn't even take your shoes off. You know I hate it when you do that."
"I'm sorry." I lowered my head.
"When you do tell me what happened because I know something did, then I will forgive you."
"I-"
Before I could respond the doorbell rang and I nearly ran - almost tripping over my own feet to get to the door.
Dante was standing behind it with a box in his hand and his backpack on his shoulder. His hair was wet from the rain.
He looked at me for a moment before his gaze moved to someone behind me.
When I looked back I saw my Dad standing right behind me.
"Come in." I opened the door wider before closing it behind him.
Dante handed the box to my Dad.
Is that a cake I smell?
"Hello. You must be Dante."
He nodded in response.
"You don't really talk, eh?" Dad patiently waited for an answer. "Cake?" He motioned to the box in his hands.
Again, all Dante did was nod.
I frowned.
Not a really good time to turn into mute mode, grumpy.
"Well then, welcome to our home. Please take your shoes and your jacket off before going upstairs. I don't appreciate water and mud all over my floors."
Dad...no, turn back into the concerned and caring mode...
Why is everyone in the wrong mode toady?
Dante proceeded to take his shoes and jacket off before he continued having a staring contest with my dad.
"I'm sorry have I got something wrong? Are you mute? I think I have a book based on understanding ASL up in my office I can go get it-"
"He's not mute, Dad. He's just...shy."
"Shy? Is that right?"
Dante only blinked in response.
This is very awkward.
"Dad can't we just go upstairs? We really need to get started on the project."
He nodded before walking away. Disappearing in the kitchen.
I cleared my throat when I saw Dante staring at me.
"Um, my rooms upstairs." I guided him.
Before he came over I had managed to hide all my stuffies in the bathroom again along with anything else that could imprint an image of me in his mind that was anything less than perfect.
"I don't really have a desk. I usually study on the floor." I confessed.
When he had taken the time to take in my room he followed me, sitting in front of the bedroom on the floor.
"Miss Almos emailed me the information about the project." I reached to grab my laptop from my bed. "She said the first step is to get to know each other."
When I saw his confused stare I explained it more.
"She said the project aims to get to know our partners and classmates, find friends through shared hobbies and learn the basics answers and questions about ourselves in Spanish. I suggest that we interview each other in English first and then try to translate everything in spanish."
Dante took the laptop off my hands to read the email himself.
"She has also given us some questions to begin with. In the end we'll each have to make a power point about the other."
"I'll go get us some water and snacks so we can begin. Do you prefer salty, sour or sweet?"
As expected I didn't receive an answer.
I rushed downstairs to get a three bowls, one with chips, one with sour patch kids and a last one with marshmallows. When I returned to my room Dante was standing with his back to me by my window.
"I'm back." I set the food down before approaching him.
The smile I had worked hard to put on display disappeared from my face when I saw what he was holding.
"Lost it?" He asked, fidgeting with the spinning figure of Hello Kitty on my pencil case. "Did you even look?"
"I-" Taking a deep breath I worked on an excuse. "Where did you find it?"
"Why are you trying to deny yourself so hard?" He turned to look at me.
"What?" I frowned.
He only kept staring at me awaiting an answer I truly didn't have.
"I really don't know what you're talking about and maybe you should lower your voice before my Dad barges in because he heard shouting."
"Answer me and then I'll lower my voice."
"I don't know what part of myself you think I'm denying, okay? I am really not."
"You're ashamed of being a little. Aren't you?" He balled up his fist on his side.
"A little? What's that?" I genuinely frowned. "Nothing you're saying is making any sense to me."
He frowned for a moment, staring at me before he sat down on the floor taking his notebook out of his backpack without speaking another word.
And just like that we went back to doing our project like nothing happened. The whole time, a deep frown was stuck on his face as he looked at me from time to time as if he was trying to figure it out. There was a question stuck in my head though...
What's a little?
