"Miss Sinclair, may I have a word with you?"
I cleared my throat. "Yes sir."
I got up from my seat and was about to leave my spot, but Wonyoung stopped me.
"Push your chair in." she whispered. I stared at her blankly but followed through anyway, gently tucking my chair under the table in an awkward manner.
Walking from the back of the class to the desk in the front was the most intimidating thing I had ever experienced. Back at Monterey, I never got in trouble for dumb shit like this, so this never had to happen. But at Pacifica, here I was stepping timidly towards Mr. Donovan with the whole classroom's eyes focused on me.
After what seemed like an eternity of torture, I reached Mr. Donovan's desk. He planted his palms on the desk and leaned closer to me, his voice coming out low. I didn't hear a single word from the class behind me, and I assumed they wanted to listen in on our conversation.
"I understand that you're new here, and that things may be different from wherever you're used to. But here at Pacifica, we are very strict about the use of vulgar language. What you said to Hyunjin back there was highly inappropriate, and I expect to hear no more out of you from this moment forward. If I hear this again in my class, you will receive a referral to Mrs. Winslet. Do I make myself clear?"
I wanted to talk back. I wanted to argue, but I know that I can't cause any more trouble here. Although I think and I always will think these rules are dumb and unnecessary, especially with the lengths they'll go to punish me for such little things, I already made a pact with myself promising that I would just try to get through this year without any drama, or any trouble. So, starting now, no more swearing.
"Yes sir. I'm sorry. You won't hear it again." my lips pulled into a tight line. I turned around and made my way back to my seat, hearing conversations start to resurface among the class now that their source of entertainment was over.
"I told you, they don't take swearing lightly. You really should watch your words, and I mean that in the most respectful way possible." Wonyoung warned me for what felt like the tenth time, and I'm pretty sure it was. I should've listened to her the first time, but instead, I wanted to be stupid and get myself in trouble before the school year even started.
"Yeah. I'll keep that in mind, for real this time." I nodded.
Hyunjin let out a breathy chuckle. It was embarrassing, knowing that I ended up appearing exactly how he thought I would; just a good-for-nothing public school kid.
