As you woke up, you found yourself alone in the room, the warmth of Billy's presence replaced by the cool touch of a blanket. A blanket that indicated that he had taken care to ensure your comfort before leaving. It seemed you had fallen asleep, the familiar sight of the ceiling greeting you once more as you stared up at it, the rain was harder now.
Besides the rain you could hear sounds from outside your room, you always had a great sense of hearing. Maybe it was a robber, maybe it was a rodent, you don't know what was worse. You sat up, debating what to do. Go back to sleep? Or check what was making those noises, though you don't know what you would do if it was either of them.
Finally, you decided to confront the source of the disturbance. You rose from the bed and opened the cabinet, there held everything you owned. Your purse, inside your dead phone, and wallet with your cash and now useless driver's license and credit cards. You picked up the other object that was inside it, though may be useless against a gun, it's something all women your age should own. Hiding it behind your back and wrapping the blanket around your shoulders for warmth and a semblance of security, you began your journey. The wooden floor creaked softly beneath your bare feet as you approached the door, your heart beating a little faster with each step.
Opening the door just a crack, you peered out into the dimly lit room, illuminated only by a single flickering candle. Rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you scanned the shadows for any sign of danger.
To your relief, it wasn't a robber or a rodent causing the commotion. Instead, Billy's stepfather, Antrim was hunched over a cabinet, rifling through its contents. As you started to close the door and retreat to bed, you noticed him slipping a stack of cash into his back pocket. It seemed you had indeed stumbled upon a thieving rodent in the night, though not the type you had initially imagined.
"What are you doing?" you asked, your voice cutting through the silence. Antrim practically jumped at the sound, turning to face you, an expression of relief washed over him when he saw that it was you.
"Nothing," he replied curtly, his tone defensive. "Go back to sleep now."
"What did you put in your pocket? I don't think that's yours," you pressed, refusing to back down.
"Who are you to say what's mine or not?" Antrim grumbled, advancing towards you. You held your ground, though the blanket wrapped around you did little to bolster your appearance.
"You're stealing. That money is not yours," you stated firmly, your voice unwavering.
"I'm stealing?" Antrim scoffed, his tone dripping with derision. "You're the one stealing, leeching off our family. My wife told me all about your pitiful story, and how she's only letting you stay because that fool Billy took a liking to you."
"I earn my keep," you shot back defiantly, though doubt gnawed at the edges of your confidence.
"You tell yourself that," Antrim retorted, his grip landing on your cheeks, tightening his hold, forcing your gaze upwards. "You better keep quiet now. I can say that you were the one trying to take the money. Took you in yet you are robbing them blind, how I caught you, and you tried seducing me to keep it a secret. You've only been here for barely a month. I'm the man of the house. Even Billy can't protect you."
"You're barely a man," you snickered, your hand tightening around the hidden object beneath the blanket. Though you didn't believe that Billy would believe Antrim over you, the possibility of being kicked out loomed over you. After all, you were just a stranger in their home.
Antrim's face flushed with anger at your remark, his expression twisting into a nasty smile. "You wanna see a man?" he sneered, his hand gripping your waist tightly. "Everything in this house is mine. Including you." His words sent shivers down your spine, disgust curling in your stomach at his predatory demeanor.
