𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡, 𝟏𝟗𝟏𝟐Aurora sat in the small classroom, her cheek resting on her palm. She watched as the rain slid down the window slowly, eventually fogging up the glass.
"Aurora." The teacher called on her. The brunette girl looked up and eyed the teacher. "Do you know the answer?" Mrs Jones asked her.
Aurora glanced over at the chalkboard and struggled to read the numbers scattered across it. She squinted hard, trying to make it look like she was trying before answering with a simple, "No."
"What?" Mrs Jones frowned.
"No I do not know the answer." Aurora continued. A few people turned and sniggered at her. But they weren't laughing with her, they were laughing at her.
The seven year old shrunk in her seat slightly and tucked her hands beneath her legs. She didn't like it when people looked at her.
Mrs Jones cleared her throat. "That's enough." She said.
"Have you heard about her dad?" A boy said loudly. "He's ran off. I reckon he's gotten sick of her and Freddie. I'd do the same if I were him." He smirked, looking over his shoulder at her.
Aurora swallowed hard and stared down at the table. He was right. Their father had left them.
"Shut up." Aurora hissed. All heads turned to her. The boy continued rambling on about her brother and their father. "Fucking shut up!" Aurora shouted, hitting her fist on the table.
"Aurora Thorne!" Mrs Jones scolded.
Rory had heard that type of language from Arthur and Freddie down at the pub.
Her eyes had began stinging as people continued laughing at her. "Aurora go down to the office right away. You cannot talk to people like that." The teacher pointed.
Aurora scoffed and shoved her chair away from the desk, storming out of the classroom. She mumbled angry words to herself as she did so. Once she got to the office, she swung the door open, letting it hit the wall.
"Miss Thorne. To what do i owe the pleasure?" Mr Benson sighed at her, standing.
Aurora folded her arms and took a seat. "Mrs Jones sent me here cause I told someone to fuck off." She emphasised her words angrily.
Mr Benson pursed his lips into a straight line. "Aurora," he began, speaking to her sympathetically. "You know i'll have to call your brother to come and get you from school." He said.
She huffed and avoided his eyes.
"But if this happens again we will have to suspend you for a day or two. And you know I don't want to do that because I think you're a girl who has a lot of potential." Mr Benson leaned against the table.
Aurora looked up at him. "Can you call Polly instead?" She suggested.
He raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"Polly Gray. You've called her for me before. I don't want Freddie to get me— he'll be annoyed with me." Aurora told him. Mr Benson looked at her for a moment but nodded, having a soft spot for the young girl.
