Things happened so fast, and Francis saw how the rescue team secured Erika towards the ambulance. They restrained her movements to avoid further damage to her body; her bones might have been broken or any internal injuries, the extent of which they didn't know yet.
"Please, please, she's pregnant. Our baby, please..." Francis uttered frantically, mindlessly holding on to Erika as they sped away to the nearest hospital.
"We can barely get a pulse; it's faint," said one medic.
Francis started to offer a prayer, "Please, Erika, don't leave me. Please, God, please save her," he repeated the words as his heart broke, seeing the red-stained blood covering her wedding dress.
The medic called the hospital and gave them a heads-up about the patient. They then checked the baby, and their faces started to turn pale.
"Why, why? What's happening?" Francis asked, clearly sensing that something was wrong.
"Your baby is barely holding on," the medic answered honestly.
A whimper broke from Francis's mouth as each piece of news felt like a stab hitting him all at once.
Francis had experienced tragedy at a young age, seeing how much his mother suffered from her illness, and witnessing her cries from unbearable pain has been a memory ingrained in his mind. But he had never experienced fear this much before. The thought of losing Erika and their child was a thought that Francis had no will even entertain at that point. They say that there was only a thin line separating the human mind from staying sane and crossing the opposite realm. However, at that very moment, he felt like he was starting to lose his mind from the massive fear that resided in his heart.
When they finally arrived at the hospital, doctors and nurses were on standby as they efficiently transferred Erika to a stretcher and headed toward the emergency room. They took her vital signs while Francis was ushered to the side.
"Are you the guardian?" The nurse asked. Francis nodded, but his attention was not on her.
"We need to act fast; we will be asking your consent to do an emergency Caesarian section to save the baby while we simultaneously operate on the patient due to her injuries." saad nito.
"Yes, anything to save both. But the baby is just 7 months, will my child be, okay?" Francis replied frantically.
"Mr. Gutierrez, it's my responsibility to inform you that we will try our best, but your wife has lost a lot of blood, she has broken bones and probably concussions, which greatly affected your baby's well-being too. In the operating table, you might lose one or both. I just want you to be prepared. Let's hope for the best," she told him the truth.
"Please... save both my wife and child," he pleaded.
Half an hour passed when Zenaida, Alan, Christian, and Trixie arrived at the hospital, looking more devastated than ever.
"Kamusta si Erika at ang bata?" Zenaida asked.
"Nasa Operating room po sila, they are trying to save both of them" sagot ni Francis is looking more lifeless.
Alan stared at him, and Francis felt his world crumbling. Nakayuko ang kanyang ulo repeatedly saying. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I failed to protect her. It's all my fault."
Hindi naglaon at dumating na din sina Lani, Rowena at Tommy sa ospital. Rowena went ahead and embraced her cousin, seeing how broken he was at that moment.
"Oh Francis..." she tried to console him.
"Hijo, I'm so sorry that this is happening." Saad ni Tommy and all Francis could do was nod.
